Los Angeles Lakers vs Denver Nuggets

Los Angeles (7-1) at Denver (6-3)

Although Friday’s game is just one of 82 on the schedule, the Denver Nuggets are understandably putting a little more emphasis on this matchup.

Facing the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers for the first time since last season’s Western Conference finals, Denver looks to get back on track following a lengthy trip.

But the way the Pacific Division-leading Lakers are playing, that could be quite a challenge.

After rolling through New Orleans and Dallas in the opening two rounds of the 2008-09 playoffs and advancing to their first West finals since 1985, the Nuggets fell to Los Angeles in six games. In the series finale at the Pepsi Center on May 29, the Lakers routed Denver 119-92 and advanced to their second straight NBA finals behind Kobe Bryant’s(notes) 35 points and 10 assists and 20 points apiece from Pau Gasol(notes) and

“We’ve been waiting kind of all summer to re-introduce ourselves to the Lakers,” coach George Karl told the Nuggets’ official Web site. “I think it’s kind of good to have the first one on your court.”

Denver and Los Angeles play four times during the regular season, but this heated rivalry got a jump-start in the preseason. In both teams’ exhibition finale Oct. 23 in San Diego, the Nuggets’ 119-105 victory was overshadowed by eight technical fouls, two flagrants and an altercation under the basket between Odom and Denver center Chris Andersen(notes).

“They’re going to be ready to go up against us, especially after the little melee we had in San Diego,” said Bryant, who averaged 36.7 points, 6.7 assists and 6.3 rebounds as the Lakers won two of three in Denver in the West finals. “It will be interesting.”

Portland Blazers vs New Orleans Hornets

Portland (6-3) at New Orleans (3-6)

Coming off Chris Paul’s(notes) best season and consecutive playoff appearances, the New Orleans Hornets had high expectations entering 2009-10.

Coach Byron Scott was the first casualty of those expectations.

After a slow start, the Hornets have fired Scott and replaced him with general manager Jeff Bower, who will make his head coaching debut Friday when New Orleans hosts the Portland Trail Blazers.

On Thursday, the Hornets announced that Bower, who has been part of the organization for more than 14 years, would replace Scott as coach. Bower was an assistant coach for New Orleans in 2003-04 under Tim Floyd, who has now been re-hired as Bower’s assistant.

Atlanta Hawks vs Boston Celtics

Atlanta 10, Boston 6

Another strong start bodes well for the Atlanta Hawks’ continued rise, but there’s one feat they’ve yet to achieve that would help them further assert themselves as an Eastern Conference power.

The Hawks will get another chance at their first win in Boston since the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett(notes) and Ray Allen(notes) as the teams meet for the first time this season Friday night.

The Celtics (8-1) have won all seven regular-season meetings with Atlanta since the start of the 2007-08 season, and even though the Hawks pushed top-seeded Boston to seven games in the teams’ first-round playoff series in 2008, their four lopsided road losses in that series are among their nine straight defeats at the TD Garden.

Atlanta (6-2) nearly won in Boston last season, with the Celtics needing Paul Pierce’s(notes) last-second jumper to win 103-102 on Nov. 12, 2008, but Boston earned a more comfortable 104-92 victory in the most recent meeting April 3.

“We don’t play the same way we do at home,” Hawks forward Josh Smith(notes) said after that game. “We get away from the things we do at home and don’t do it on the road.”

After they went 1-4 on the road in last season’s playoffs and got swept in the second round by Cleveland, the Hawks are hoping things have changed. They’re 3-2 away from Atlanta during their strong start, including a quality win at Portland.
