Pacquiao OKs May 13 bout vs Mayweather

Z gorres collapsed moment after the winner was announced

Pacquiao-Mayweather ahead of the November Yahoo! Sports

With each man likely to be paid as if he were a Wall Street CEO, money shouldn’t be a factor in preventing a bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. sometime in the spring of 2010 in the ultimate boxing showdown.

The fight will undoubtedly be the largest-grossing bout in history and might be the most anticipated since Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier met for the first time at New York’s Madison Square Garden on March 8, 1971.

If a fight against each other is not the next bout for Mayweather and Pacquiao, each ought to retire. The public and media outrage will be enormous and the very credibility of the sport will be threatened.
Rarely does the public have an appetite for a bout like it does this one. You have two men in the same division, each with a stake to the mythical status as boxing’s best fighter while each is in his prime.
They’re both also at the height of their earning powers and will make so much money they’ll make Alex Rodriguez envious.
The repercussions will be enormous if the bout is not made. Boxing will look like a second-rate sport – and deservedly so – if the biggest fight and the one the fans most want to see is not made. “Consolation” bouts like ones pitting Mayweather against Shane Mosley or Pacquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez, simply won’t cut it.
Mayweather, in particular, will be crucified if a deal isn’t reached. Fairly or unfairly (depending upon whom you speak to), Mayweather has been ridiculed for avoiding tough competition since 2003. Mayweather moved up to lightweight in 2002 and instantly took on Jose Luis Castillo, who at the time was regarded as the world’s best 135-pounder.
Mayweather defeated Castillo in controversial fashion in their first bout that year, then beat him clearly in their second. Since then, however, Mayweather has been questioned about his choice of opponents.
He’s fought 11 times since 2003 and Marquez, whom he routed in September, is the only one of those who was widely regarded as one of the world’s 10 best pound-for-pound fighters.
There was, though, a problem with that. Even though Marquez was ranked No. 2 by many polls, including Yahoo! Sports, going into the Mayweather fight, he was moving up from lightweight to face Mayweather at welterweight. Thus the win didn’t carry the same significance for many that it would have had he beaten a legitimate, world-class welterweight like Pacquiao did with Cotto.
If promoters Bob Arum of Top Rank and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy are unable to come to terms for a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, the brunt of the blame, whether it’s deserved or not, will fall on Mayweather’s shoulders. He’ll look like he’s running again.
But Pacquiao needs to fight Mayweather, too. He’s had to deal with questions about each of his past four opponents, as he’s made his march up from the super featherweight division.
He needs to defeat an in-his-prime star like Mayweather to end all doubts.
Bottom line, each needs the other and boxing needs the fight.
Pacquiao’s dynamic 12th-round stoppage of Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena resonated with the 31 voters in the Yahoo! Sports poll. Pacquiao was slightly ahead of Mayweather in October’s poll, though Mayweather actually received two more first-place votes.
After Pacquiao’s destruction of Cotto, though, it became a landslide for the Filipino superstar. Pacquiao received 27 first-place votes among the 31 cast. The other four went to Mayweather.
It’s Pacquiao-Mayweather ahead of the November Yahoo! Sports poll, and it’s likely to stay that way until they meet – hopefully – next year.

Allen Iverson Top Ten Plays (Career Highlights)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Larry Brown has a message for Allen Iverson(notes): don’t give up.

Iverson’s former coach said Friday he thinks the 10-time All-Star “still has a passion to play” and shouldn’t retire. An online report this week indicated Iverson had decided to end his career after receiving little interest from NBA teams.

Brown, who coached Iverson in Philadelphia when he was voted league MVP in 2001 while leading the 76ers to the NBA finals, said he’s been trying to get in touch with him.

“Anybody that knows him understands how much he loves to play,” said Brown, now coaching the Charlotte Bobcats.

Orlando Magic vs Atlanta Hawks

Orlando (11-4) at Atlanta (11-3)

The Orlando Magic won the Southeast Division by 12 games last season, never really needing to worry about their lead after the beginning of January.

The Atlanta Hawks think they’ll stick around much longer this time.

The Hawks have the best record in the Eastern Conference through the season’s first month, and they’ll get their first crack at the defending conference champions on Thanksgiving night at Philips Arena.

Orlando (11-4) held a 3 1/2-game lead over Atlanta on Jan. 1, but the Hawks couldn’t get any closer as the Magic cruised to the Southeast title on their way to the NBA finals.

Massacre suspect Andal Ampatuan Jr. surrenders

Prime suspect in Philippine massacre surrenders

AMPATUAN, Philippines – Authorities say a scion of a powerful clan suspected in the massacre of 57 people in an election caravan in the southern Philippines has turned himself in.

The dead from Monday's massacre include the wife, family and dozens of journalists and supporters of a gubernatorial candidate who wanted to challenge the rival Ampatuan clan, which has ruled the lawless province of Maguindanao unopposed for years.

Army Lt. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer says Andal Ampatuan Jr., a town mayor who allegedly stopped the convoy with four police commanders and dozens of police and pro-government militiamen, surrendered himself to presidential peace adviser Jesus Dureza in the provincial capital.

Ampatuan's family is denying the allegations of his involvement in the slayings.

AMPATUAN, Philippines (AP) — Officials found 11 more bodies Wednesday at the site of an attack on an election caravan in the south, bringing the death toll in the massacre to 57, and police said they are investigating a member of a powerful clan allied with the president's administration.

Six of the bodies in southern Maguindanao province were discovered in a large pit buried alongside three vehicles, and five were found in a mass grave a few miles (kilometers) off the main highway.

The vehicles — a sedan and two vans — were crushed by a large backhoe that ran over and buried them, investigator Jose Garcia said. Police were trying to determine if the vehicles were part of the caravan.

The dead from Monday's massacre included the wife and two sisters of gubernatorial candidate Ismael Mangudadatu and 18 Filipino journalists accompanying the caravan. It is the largest number of reporters killed in a single attack anywhere in the world, according to media groups.

Police identified the prime suspect as Andal Ampatuan Jr., a scion of the powerful Ampatuan clan led by the former provincial governor. The clan, which has ruled the province unopposed for eight years, helped President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her allies win the 2004 presidential and 2007 senatorial elections by delivering crucial votes.

The military also said it will disarm two government-armed civilian militia companies, or about 200 men, in the province. The militia are meant to act as an auxiliary force to the military and police in fighting rebels and criminals but often serve as a private security force.

The killings provoked outrage beyond the Philippines, with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and media and human rights watchdogs urging Arroyo to punish the attackers.

Mangudadatu, after receiving death threats, had sent his wife and relatives to submit his candidacy. He wanted to challenge Andal Ampatuan Jr., who serves as a town mayor and whose family has ruled the province with an iron fist backed up by private armies and legions of bodyguards.

Mangudadatu said four people whom he refused to identify told him the convoy was stopped by dozens of gunmen loyal to Ampatuan. Police said they are investigating reports that Ampatuan, four police commanders, and dozens of police and pro-government militiamen were among the gunmen who blocked the convoy.

National Police Chief Jesus Versoza said the four commanders — including one provincial police chief — were relieved of their duties and confined to camp while being investigated.

Arroyo vowed justice for the victims and declared a national day of mourning.

"This is a supreme act of inhumanity that is a blight on our nation," she said in a statement. "The perpetrators will not escape justice. The law will haunt them until they are caught."

Arroyo declared a state of emergency in Maguindanao and a neighboring Sultan Kudarat province, sending extra troops and police. Troops set up checkpoints to confiscate illegal weapons, military spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner said.

The country's tourism secretary, Ace Durano, said in a statement that tourism spots frequented by travelers to the Philippines were unaffected.

Few think Arroyo will be able to restore the rule of law in the impoverished, lawless region that has been outside the central government's reach for generations, and where warlords backed by private armies go by their own rules. Maguindanao's acting governor is Sajid Ampatuan, another son of former Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., the clan's patriarch. Members of the family could not be reached for comment.

The clan helped deliver votes for the Arroyo administration in 2004 elections. Human Rights Watch expressed concern Wednesday that the administration's relationship with the family would hinder an impartial investigation.

Arroyo's ruling party, in an emergency meeting late Wednesday, expelled Ampatuan Sr. and his two sons.

Arroyo adviser Jesus Dureza said he met Tuesday with Andal Ampatuan Sr. and received assurances that his family would cooperate in the probe. Many throughout the Philippines expressed skepticism.

The U.S. Embassy in Manila condemned the killings. "Such barbaric acts violate the most fundamental principles of human rights and democracy," Ambassador Kristie Kenney said. "We strongly believe that a thorough, rapid, and transparent investigation must be conducted, and those responsible must be brought to swift justice."

Among the dead journalists was Alejandro "Bong" Reblando, 53, a former Associated Press stringer and the most senior in the group of reporters. Reblando, who was based in General Santos City, was a staffer for the Manila Bulletin daily newspaper.

He covered the southern Philippines for the AP from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, reporting on the Muslim separatist insurgency as well as local politics.

He is survived by his wife and seven children.

Dallas (10-4) at Houston (8-6)

In their last game, the Dallas Mavericks faded late against a team that was playing extremely short-handed.

That doesn’t bode well for their next contest against the well-rested Houston Rockets.

The Mavericks look to avoid suffering back-to-back losses for the first time this season Wednesday when they visit the Rockets, who haven’t played since Saturday.

Dallas (10-4) saw its five-game winning streak snapped in a 111-103 loss to Golden State on Tuesday. The Warriors used only six players due to injuries, but it was the Mavericks - who hadn’t played since Friday - who were the ones who struggled to close the game out. They led 98-89 but got outscored 22-5 the rest of the way.

Pacquiao tested clean following Nov. 14 TKO win over Cotto

NEW YORK (SI.COM) -- Seven-time world champion Manny Pacquiao tested clean following his Nov. 14 TKO over Miguel Cotto, SI.com has learned.

Pacquiao, who became the first boxer to win seven championships in as many weight classes, underwent urine tests twice -- before and after the fight -- and both came back negative, said Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. It's the the 10th time the Filipino has turned in clean tests in Nevada.

Immediately following Pacquiao's win over Cotto, fans inside the MGM Grand Arena pleaded for a megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who many regard as the top pound-for-pound fighter since his return in September. In response to the expected fanfare, Floyd Mayweather Sr. publicly accused Pacquiao of taking steroids.

Mayweather Sr., Floyd's father and trainer, told SI's Chris Mannix that he believed Pacquiao's ability to take Cotto's powerful shots and keep coming proved the champion was taking performance-enhancing substances. "I know Floyd is the best," said Mayweather Sr. "But when [your opponent] uses something illegal, even the best can get hurt."

Detroit Pistons vs Phoenix Suns

Detroit (5-8) at Phoenix (10-3

While the Phoenix Suns have generally looked strong in their climb to the top of the Western Conference, they’ve had some lackluster performances in their losses.

The Suns look to bounce back from one of those defeats and avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time this season Sunday when they host the Detroit Pistons, who are trying to snap a four-game skid.

After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004 last season, Phoenix (10-3) has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the league. With a potent offense led by Steve Nash(notes), the Suns have scored 100 or more points in each of their first 13 games and are tied with Dallas atop the West.

New Orleans Hornets vs Miami Heat

New Orleans (6-8) at Miami (7-5)

The Miami Heat have certainly cooled off after a strong start. Sub-par defensive play has been a major factor, and a meeting with the suddenly surging New Orleans Hornets might not help, either.

The Heat will try to halt a three-game losing streak Sunday night by beating the Hornets for the first time in nearly three years.

Miami (7-5) opened the season by winning six of seven, but have since lost four of five and their current losing streak matches their longest from last season.

Pacquiao earns P1.3 billion (PPV generated 1.25 million buys)

Here’s one billion reasons why Manny Pacquiao should maximize his remaining potential earnings inside the ring.

Bob Arum, in a report by ESPN reveals Pacquiao will receive $22 million now that the official Pay-Per-View counting is about to be concluded.

Convert that to Philippine peso and that will translate to a whopping P1.3 billion based on yesterday’s 46.8 peso-dollar rate.

Atlanta Hawks vs New Orleans Hornets

Atlanta (11-2) at New Orleans (5-8)

One week ago, the surging Atlanta Hawks easily beat a New Orleans Hornets club struggling to find its footing under new head coach Jeff Bower.

Neither team has lost since.

Seeking their longest winning streak in 12 years, the Hawks visit New Orleans on Saturday night for a rematch with Bower’s revitalized Hornets.

Atlanta (11-2) hasn’t won its division since 1993-94, but currently owns the NBA’s best record thanks to its winning streak, which reached seven Friday night with a 105-103 home victory over Houston. Josh Smith(notes) had nine points - failing to reach double figures for only the second time this season - but scored the winning basket on a putback of a Mike Bibby(notes) miss with 0.7 seconds remaining.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Cleveland Cavaliers

Philadelphia (5-7) at Cleveland (9-4)

While the Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t about to rush back aging superstar Shaquille O’Neal(notes) from a shoulder injury, LeBron James(notes) is not letting a sore wrist slow him down.

Coming off his highest-scoring game of the season, James looks to help the Cavaliers win for the 10th time in 12 contests Saturday night when they host the struggling Philadelphia 76ers.

James banged his left wrist on the basket while dunking late in Wednesday’s 108-91 loss to Washington, but the injury didn’t seem to bother him much in Friday’s 105-95 win at Indiana. The reigning league MVP scored 10 of his season-high 40 points in the final 7:07, and also had nine rebounds and seven assists to help the Cavaliers (9-4) continue their surge after back-to-back losses to open the season.

Miami Heat vs Toronto Raptors

Miami (7-4) at Toronto (5-7)

Even Dwyane Wade(notes) endures stretches of poor shooting at times. He isn’t accustomed to poor games against the Toronto Raptors, though.

Wade struggled with his shot as the Miami Heat suffered consecutive losses for the first time this season, but he appears to have a good opportunity to end his problems in a matchup with the Raptors on Friday night.

Miami (7-4) has lost three of four after a fast start, with its star guard shooting 32.4 percent (12 for 37) over the last two games - a 100-87 loss to Oklahoma City on Tuesday night and a 105-90 defeat at Atlanta the following evening.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Indiana Pacers

Cleveland (8-4) at Indiana (5-4)

Already without Shaquille O’Neal(notes), the Cleveland Cavaliers don’t want to think about the possibility of LeBron James’(notes) sore wrist causing him to miss any time.

He’s caused enough of a headache for the Indiana Pacers of late.

James recorded two triple-doubles and a 47-point performance in his past four trips to Conseco Fieldhouse, and the Cavaliers hope the reigning MVP’s wrist won’t hinder him as they seek their 11th win in 12 games against the Pacers.

Golden State Warriors vs Boston Celtics

Golden State (3-7) at Boston (8-3)

The Boston Celtics don’t seem overly concerned about their first rough stretch of the season.

The Celtics look to avoid a third consecutive loss when they host the undermanned Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night.

Since opening the season with six straight wins, Boston (8-3) has dropped three of five and is trying to get back on track after its first back-to-back losses of the season. The Celtics fell 97-86 to Atlanta on Friday before losing 113-104 at Indiana on Saturday.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Washington Wizards

Cleveland (8-3) at Washington (2-7)

Injuries are mounting for Cleveland, but LeBron James(notes) is doing his part to help the Cavaliers overcome them.

With Shaquille O’Neal(notes) and Anderson Varejao(notes) likely sidelined again Wednesday night, the reigning NBA MVP will try to help the Cavaliers beat the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center for the first time in more than two years.

O’Neal has missed two games with a strained shoulder and wasn’t expected to travel to Washington with the team, and coach Mike Brown doesn’t think Varejao will be ready to return from a hip contusion to face the Wizards.

Golden State can only hope the return netted them some defensive help.

The acquisition of Raja Bell(notes) comes after the Warriors allowed a historic individual performance over the weekend, and they’ll have their hands full again Tuesday when they visit LeBron James(notes) and the Cleveland Cavaliers - who nearly became Jackson’s new team.

Pacquiao, coming off his dominating win over Miguel Cotto, opened as an 8-5 favorite at sports books operated by Station Casinos, and it didn't take long for bettors to take a side. Several $20,000 bets were put down on Mayweather, forcing the line down to 7-5 in the early going, said Art Manteris, the casino operator's vice president of sports book operations.

"It's been pretty decisive in the early going," Manteris said. "I think I made the line a little too high but that's the nature of the business."

Manteris said he made Pacquiao the favorite based largely on the public perception of his big win over Cotto. Most of the early bets, he said, came from professional handicappers, who thought the line was too high.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said he was ready to begin negotiations with Mayweather's promoter on a fight, while Mayweather issued a statement Monday saying he wanted to hear from Pacquiao himself that he really wants the fight.

"Tell Manny Pacquiao to be his own man and stop letting everyone, including his loudmouth trainer, talk for him," Mayweather said. "I am my own boss, speak for myself and tell it like it is. If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight me, all he has to do is step up to the plate and say it himself."

Pacquiao told The Associated Press last month he didn't think Mayweather wanted to fight him, and criticized the undefeated fighter for fighting too defensively and not trying to entertain fans.

His trainer, Freddie Roach, said after the Cotto fight that Pacquiao would be more than happy to fight Mayweather, but that Mayweather wasn't going to dictate the terms of the fight. Talks will likely be difficult, especially when it comes to what percentage of the revenues each fighter would receive.

The fight, though, has the possibility of becoming the richest ever and many in boxing assume that there is far too much money to be made for the fight not to happen.

"I think that's the fight the world wants to see," Roach said. "But if Floyd wants a 65-35 split (of the purse) he's not going to get it."

Assuming the fight can be made, it would likely take place next May. Las Vegas casinos would have the inside track on landing it, but there has been speculation that it could go somewhere like the new Dallas Cowboys stadium or even Yankee Stadium.

ESPN Interview After the Fight Pacquiao Discusses Win Over Cotto

Manny Pacquiao sits down with Brian Kenny to talk about his win over Miguel Cotto

Exclusive Floyd Mayweather Jr. Interview,”I’ll easily beat Manny Pacquiao” (Video)

Just after Manny Pacquiao stopped Miguel Cotto for his WBO welterweight title on Saturday night, Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. had an exclusive sit down interview with Sky Sports UK about a possible Manny Pacquiao fight.

Floyd commented on Manny’s recent victory of Miguel Cotto and doesn’t believe Manny Pacquiao has any versatility and is just a one dimensional fighter.

He believes Pacquiao doesn’t really want to fight him, and feels the world is forcing this fight on him because Manny had no comment when media men asked if he wanted to fight Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather also feels he is in a no win situation, because people will just discredit his win over Pacman especially since Manny has 3 losses and knocked out twice before, he feels people will have excuses already.

According to news Gorres “butchok is still in the operating room in a self induced coma that would last for a several days and that “hopefully he will return to consciousness“.

Houston Rockets vs Los Angeles Lakers

Houston (5-4) at Los Angeles (7-2)

The Los Angeles Lakers were fortunate to escape Houston with a victory in their first meeting, pulling out an overtime win despite not being at their best offensively.

The second half of their latest road performance unequivocally qualifies as their worst.

The Lakers look to bounce back from their most futile half in franchise history Sunday afternoon when they open a home-heavy stretch seeking their sixth straight regular-season win against the Houston Rockets.

Los Angeles (7-2) needed overtime to win both of its first two road games as Kobe Bryant(notes) averaged 36.0 points in a 101-98 win at Oklahoma City and a 103-102 escape at Houston on Nov. 3 and 4.

Through one half of the Lakers’ first road game since, it looked like they were headed for another tight finish. Bryant had 19 points in the first half as Los Angeles trailed Denver 58-56 on Friday.

A pair of free throws shortly before halftime would be the last points Bryant would score, however. The Lakers scored 23 points in the final 24 minutes - a franchise-low for a half - and Bryant was shut out in a half for the first time since April 11, 2004, as the Nuggets cruised to a 105-79 victory.

“They beat the hell out of us,” Bryant said. “… They executed extremely well and we tried to keep it within a manageable distance. We weren’t able to do that though and they broke us open pretty good.”

Toronto Raptors vs Phoenix Suns

Toronto (5-4) at Phoenix (8-2)

The Phoenix Suns’ strong play has been surprising to some. Another win over the Toronto Raptors, however, would hardly be unexpected.

The Suns, coming off their worst game during what has been an otherwise terrific start, look to beat the Raptors for the 11th straight time Sunday night.

Expectations weren’t very high after Phoenix (8-2) missed the playoffs last season. The Suns, though, have been one of the league’s biggest early surprises, with their only losses coming against last summer’s NBA finalists.

Phoenix fell 121-102 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. It lost 122-100 to Orlando on Nov. 4.

“Well two weeks ago we weren’t supposed to make the playoffs,” point guard Steve Nash(notes) said of the Suns’ critics. “You know, our team needs to look at this as a project. We are just trying to get better every day, and I think we are improving.”

Phoenix had its worst shooting game of the season versus the Lakers, making 36.5 percent of its attempts after hitting at least 45.5 percent in each of its first nine contests.

Still, Phoenix scored 100 points in its first 10 games for the first time since a 12-game run to start the 1990-91 season. The Suns seem likely to extend that run Sunday.

Phoenix has won 10 in a row over Toronto (5-4), averaging 118.2 points and shooting 52.2 percent, since a 101-94 home loss Feb. 10, 2004. The Raptors have also struggled defensively this season, giving up 106.4 points per game

Dallas Mavericks vs Detroit Pistons

Dallas (6-3) at Detroit (5-4)

Short-handed for most of the first three weeks of the season, the Detroit Pistons have taken advantage of a soft schedule to win three straight.

Their ability to overcome their injury problems will likely face a stiffer challenge with the Dallas Mavericks coming to town.

Likely without two of their top players again, the Pistons look to extend their streak Sunday night against the Mavericks, winners of four of the teams’ last five meetings.

Detroit (5-4) has played most of the season without Richard Hamilton(notes) (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince(notes) (back) and dropped four of its first six with its two longest-tenured players sidelined. The Pistons, though, have rebounded with three consecutive victories by taking advantage of matchups with struggling Philadelphia, Charlotte and Washington.

Offseason acquisitions Ben Gordon(notes) and Charlie Villanueva(notes) have been integral to Detroit’s recent success. Gordon is averaging 24.7 points and shooting 51.8 percent from the field during the winning streak, and Villanueva is averaging 23.7 points and shooting 60.0 percent over that same stretch.

Pacquiao-Mayweather Would Be a Modern-Day Ali-Frazier

LAS VEGAS -- The superlatives ran rampant during the aftermath of Manny Pacquiao's brilliantly violent beatdown of Miguel Cotto on Saturday night in an MGM Grand Garden Arena packed to its rafters with more than 16,200 fans.

Having witnessed the Filipino superstar's array of speed, athleticism and durability used to batter senseless the Puerto Rican warrior before their fight was stopped 55 seconds into the 12th round, promoter Bob Arum declared Pacquiao "the best fighter that I've ever seen -- and that includes Muhammad Ali, and Sugar Ray Leonard, and Marvin Hagler."

Ross Greenburg, head honcho of sports programming at HBO, told reporters it is time for Pacquiao to face his unbeaten, pound-for-pound rival, Floyd Mayweather, in a "Super Bowl" type of matchup whose modern-day significance would rival Ali-Joe Frazier.

In fact, the crowd, in unison, chanted, "We want Floyd," during the fight's immediate conclusion.

"Floyd believes that he's the best in the world. And having witnessed Manny's performance tonight, and having seen what Manny has done against both [Oscar] De La Hoya and [Ricky] Hatton, it's clear that Manny has an argument," said Greenburg, who already has set up a meeting for Monday between Arum and Richard Shaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, representing Mayweather.

"Shaefer said that he would begin negotiating with Bob on Monday. And we have to settle it in the ring. What's most important is to seize the opportunity right now," said Greenburg. "This fight is huge, and I don't know if the sky is the limit. This is on the Super Bowl level, and it should be treated that way. We have to do it the right way and take it to another level."

Pacquiao floored Cotto twice and lost maybe one round in the fight on the way to earning the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) title. In the process, "The Pac-Man" became the first fighter to earn a seventh belt in as many different weight classes.

Pacquiao batters Cotto for TKO win

Pacquiao batters Cotto for TKO win

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Manny Pacquiao spent long, hard weeks getting ready for one of the biggest nights of his life. Hundreds of hours sparring in sweltering gyms, nearly as many on morning runs through deserted streets.

Not to mention all those nights rehearsing with the band.

Many in boxing think Miguel Cotto will be Pacquiao’s toughest challenge when they meet Saturday night in a highly anticipated 145-pound fight. But after trading punches he has to please another kind of crowd when he takes the stage to sing with his band later that night down the Las Vegas Strip.

His trainer would rather he concentrate on the immediate task at hand. But Freddie Roach understands by now that Pacquiao can’t keep still in the ring or out.

“I’m against the concert, of course,” Roach said. “But he does a lot of stuff. He’s multitasking all the time.”

The stuff includes everything from helping victims of the recent typhoon in his native Philippines to starring in an action movie called “Wapakman.” The father of four—who named one of his daughters Queen Elizabeth—has so many things going on all the time that even his ever expanding entourage has trouble keeping track.

None of it matters, though, if he doesn’t take care of business Saturday night when he again carries the weight of a nation on his shoulders in the latest in a string of fights that have made him wildly popular far beyond his home country.

Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Angel Cotto

The fight will be aired on:

Eastern Time: Nov.14 Saturday 9 PM
Pacific Time: Nov.14 Saturday 6 PM
Manila Time: Nov.15 Sunday 10 AM

The fight will be on the catch weight of 145 where Pacquiao has been great in last 2 fights (Dela Hoya & Hatton). But Cotto has been fighting his whole career on the 147+ weight class.

With Miguel Cotto training for almost 2 months already for this fight and Pacquiao's training in Baguio was interrupted by the typhoon. Will the peoples champ and reigning Pound for Pound king Manny Pacquiao be able to over come his biggest challenge yet named Miguel Cotto.

The live streaming will be available on the airing date, so please come back for updates.

Boxing Report and Photos: Z Gorres Wins Fight, Gets Taken Away In A Stretcher - Critical Condition

Zeta Celestino Oliveros Gorres, better known as Z Gorres, is a Philippine professional boxer.

Gorres has a brother named Jun Gorres who was formerly a boxer but was stabbed to death in a street fight. His real name is a combination of those of his parents; Zeta (mother) and Celestino (father) Gorres.
[edit] Fight career

Gorres became a boxing practitioner at 9 years of age.He began fighting as a professional on March 31, 2001. After winning 13 bouts in a row, he fought Edgar Rodrigo for the Philippine flyweight title on June 1, 2003. He, however, lost to Rodrigo by TKO in the 9th round which marked his first defeat.

One of Gorres' significant victories was his 1st round stoppage of Glenn Donaire, brother of former IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire, on March 19, 2005. This was his first bout in the United States.

About a year later, he won the OPBF super flyweight title against Waenpetch Chuwatana.

On February 24, 2007, Gorres got a shot for a world title where he challenged WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel in a bout held in Gorres' hometown. There, Gorres was deducted a point twice (one in the 10th and another in the 12th round) for holding. Montiel won the fight and defended the title in a disputed split decision.

He fought former IBF flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan on February 2, 2008 in an IBF title eliminator. The winner was to face then IBF super flyweight titlist Dimitri Kirilov of Russia who would later be dethroned by Darchinyan on August 2, 2008. The match, however, was tarnished by poor refereeing and bottle-throwing from spectators who disliked it. The bout ended in a split draw. Nonetheless, Darchinyan won the right to fight for the championship because he was ranked higher than Gorres in IBF.

Gorres moved to bantamweight and won his first match in that division on March 14, 2009. There, he bested former IBF minimumweight champion Roberto Carlos Leyva in 7 rounds.

On November 13, 2009, after winning a 10 round bout against Luis Melendez, Gorres collapsed in the ring and was removed on a stretcher. He is reportedly in critical condition and undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on the brain.

Southpaw Z Gorres (30-2-2, 15KOs) dropped Colombia's Luis Melendez (26-4-1, 21KOs) in the third round of scheduled ten round Bantamweight outing, controlled the majority of the fight behind sharp shots and solid defense before getting nailed hard by a Melendez left in the final minute of the fight.

Able to beat the count and holding on in the last seconds of a Melendez charge, Gorrez was barely able to stand upright. Under wobbly legs he would be declared the winner with scores of 98-90 (twice) and 97-91.

Glassy eyed and still wobbly, Gorrez tried to get out of the ring under his own power, but drop to the ground. After several worrying minutes, Gorrez was taken away on a stretcher still in bad shape to the nearby University Medical Center. Update: Latest word is that Z Gorres is in critical condition and is under going surgery for head trauma.

Los Angeles Lakers vs Denver Nuggets

Los Angeles (7-1) at Denver (6-3)

Although Friday’s game is just one of 82 on the schedule, the Denver Nuggets are understandably putting a little more emphasis on this matchup.

Facing the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers for the first time since last season’s Western Conference finals, Denver looks to get back on track following a lengthy trip.

But the way the Pacific Division-leading Lakers are playing, that could be quite a challenge.

After rolling through New Orleans and Dallas in the opening two rounds of the 2008-09 playoffs and advancing to their first West finals since 1985, the Nuggets fell to Los Angeles in six games. In the series finale at the Pepsi Center on May 29, the Lakers routed Denver 119-92 and advanced to their second straight NBA finals behind Kobe Bryant’s(notes) 35 points and 10 assists and 20 points apiece from Pau Gasol(notes) and

“We’ve been waiting kind of all summer to re-introduce ourselves to the Lakers,” coach George Karl told the Nuggets’ official Web site. “I think it’s kind of good to have the first one on your court.”

Denver and Los Angeles play four times during the regular season, but this heated rivalry got a jump-start in the preseason. In both teams’ exhibition finale Oct. 23 in San Diego, the Nuggets’ 119-105 victory was overshadowed by eight technical fouls, two flagrants and an altercation under the basket between Odom and Denver center Chris Andersen(notes).

“They’re going to be ready to go up against us, especially after the little melee we had in San Diego,” said Bryant, who averaged 36.7 points, 6.7 assists and 6.3 rebounds as the Lakers won two of three in Denver in the West finals. “It will be interesting.”

Portland Blazers vs New Orleans Hornets

Portland (6-3) at New Orleans (3-6)

Coming off Chris Paul’s(notes) best season and consecutive playoff appearances, the New Orleans Hornets had high expectations entering 2009-10.

Coach Byron Scott was the first casualty of those expectations.

After a slow start, the Hornets have fired Scott and replaced him with general manager Jeff Bower, who will make his head coaching debut Friday when New Orleans hosts the Portland Trail Blazers.

On Thursday, the Hornets announced that Bower, who has been part of the organization for more than 14 years, would replace Scott as coach. Bower was an assistant coach for New Orleans in 2003-04 under Tim Floyd, who has now been re-hired as Bower’s assistant.

Atlanta Hawks vs Boston Celtics

Atlanta 10, Boston 6

Another strong start bodes well for the Atlanta Hawks’ continued rise, but there’s one feat they’ve yet to achieve that would help them further assert themselves as an Eastern Conference power.

The Hawks will get another chance at their first win in Boston since the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett(notes) and Ray Allen(notes) as the teams meet for the first time this season Friday night.

The Celtics (8-1) have won all seven regular-season meetings with Atlanta since the start of the 2007-08 season, and even though the Hawks pushed top-seeded Boston to seven games in the teams’ first-round playoff series in 2008, their four lopsided road losses in that series are among their nine straight defeats at the TD Garden.

Atlanta (6-2) nearly won in Boston last season, with the Celtics needing Paul Pierce’s(notes) last-second jumper to win 103-102 on Nov. 12, 2008, but Boston earned a more comfortable 104-92 victory in the most recent meeting April 3.

“We don’t play the same way we do at home,” Hawks forward Josh Smith(notes) said after that game. “We get away from the things we do at home and don’t do it on the road.”

After they went 1-4 on the road in last season’s playoffs and got swept in the second round by Cleveland, the Hawks are hoping things have changed. They’re 3-2 away from Atlanta during their strong start, including a quality win at Portland.

pacman vs. Cotto Live Weigh-in watch video

Sorry for the low quality but hey, it's the weigh -in! Manny looked BIG.His chest, shoulders, and stomach loked bigger. He even looked taller than Cotto but my guess is Cotto didnt have his shoes on, Manny did. Let's see who looks bigger tomorrow night better yet, WHO WINS!!!!!!!

Phoenix Suns vs Los Angeles Lakers

Phoenix (8-1) at Los Angeles (6-1)

Off to their best start in 29 seasons, the Phoenix Suns are thriving in their up-tempo style.

The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t surprised at all.

The Pacific Division-leading Suns look to win their fifth straight game Thursday night, when they’ll face the defending champion Lakers for the first time this season.

Back home following a 4-1 eastern trip, Phoenix (8-1) routed New Orleans 124-104 on Wednesday. Amare Stoudemire had 21 points, Grant Hill(notes) added 18 and six other Suns scored in double figures as Phoenix set a season high in points while matching Boston with the league’s best record.

After missing the playoffs last season for the first time since 2004, the Suns are off to their best start since opening 11-1 in 1980-81. Phoenix has scored 100 or more in each of its first nine games for the first time since 1990-91.

“It was a great win for us,” coach Alvin Gentry said. “I thought we played as well as we could in the first half. Offensively, we did a good job of staying in attack mode.”

Since Gentry took over for the final 31 games last season for the fired Terry Porter, who tried to implement a slowed-down approach with the Suns, Phoenix has scored 98 or more in 39 of 40 contests.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Miami Heat

Cleveland (5-3) at Miami (6-1)

In the ongoing drama surrounding next summer’s free-agent class, rumors have swirled of LeBron James(notes) and Dwyane Wade(notes), who have been teammates in All-Star games and the Olympics and are friends off the court, teaming up to form a mega-tandem.

For the time being, James is focused on winning with the Cleveland Cavaliers while Wade is trying to do the same with the Miami Heat.

With his team starting to find its rhythm after a sluggish start, James and the Cavaliers seek their sixth victory in seven games Thursday night when they visit Wade and a Heat team trying to open 7-1 for the first time in franchise history.

In nearly every arena James visits, the reigning league MVP has been bombarded with questions of potentially opting out of his contract at the end of this season and becoming a free agent.

Frustrated by the repeated questions about his future, James said prior to Wednesday’s 102-93 win in Orlando he would no longer talk about the subject again this season.

New Orleans Hornets vs Phoenix Suns

New Orleans (3-5) at Phoenix (7-1)

Steve Nash(notes) has been outstanding lately for the red-hot Phoenix Suns, and Chris Paul(notes) may have trouble keeping up with the two-time MVP despite being 11 years his junior.

That matchup of point guards could be key, especially depending on Paul’s health, when the Suns are welcomed home by what should be a very appreciative crowd Wednesday night as they take on the New Orleans Hornets.

Paul twisted his left ankle shortly before halftime Monday night but returned in the third quarter to lead New Orleans to a 112-84 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. He had 24 points and 10 assists despite sitting out the fourth.

The 24-year-old All-Star had a big bag of ice on the ankle after the game, and the injury could potentially hamper him Wednesday.

It was an important win for the Hornets (3-5), who one night earlier were blown out 104-88 by the Lakers for their fourth loss in five games.

“There’s still a long way to go in this season, and we have to get back to reaching our potential and doing our best,” Paul said.

Dallas Mavericks vs San Antonio Spurs

Dallas (5-2) at San Antonio (3-3)

With two All-Stars sitting out because of injuries, the San Antonio Spurs delivered their best offensive performance of the young season. To beat the Dallas Mavericks, however, the Spurs will likely need a better defensive effort.

It’s unclear if Tim Duncan(notes) or Tony Parker(notes) will be available Wednesday night when the Spurs host the Mavericks in the teams’ first meeting since Dallas ousted San Antonio from the first round of the playoffs in April.

Parker and Duncan were both sidelined by ankle injuries Monday night. Parker has a mild sprain the team has said could keep him out for a week, and Duncan is considered day-to-day with swelling in his left ankle.

Despite missing two of their top players, the Spurs (3-3) beat Toronto 131-124, recording their highest point total since a 133-126 double-overtime win at Dallas on Dec. 9. Manu Ginobili(notes) scored 36 points off the bench, Richard Jefferson(notes) added 24, and George Hill(notes) had 22 in his first start of the season. All three point totals were individual season highs.

San Antonio is averaging 119.0 points in its wins, and has been held to 89.3 points per game in its losses. The Spurs, though, feel that stepping up their defense is the key to staying on track. They’re giving up 102.5 points per game after holding opponents under 94.0 each of the last 12 seasons.

“I think we’re going to score, we just got to play better defense,” said Ginobili, who made six of San Antonio’s season-high 14 3-pointers and had eight assists and a career-high four blocked shots against the Raptors. “We were talking before the season about trying to be the best team in the league defensively, and so far we’re not even close.”

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Orlando Magic

Cleveland (4-3) at Orlando (6-2)

In a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference finals, perhaps the most intrigue surrounds two players that weren’t even a part of the series.

Shaquille O’Neal(notes) and the Cleveland Cavaliers meet Vince Carter(notes) and the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night for the first time since the playoffs.

Cleveland (4-3) was the top seed in the Eastern Conference last season, but was ousted in six games by Orlando (6-2), which went on to fall in five games to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finals.

Much of the blame for that surprise exit was placed on the Cavaliers’ inability to defend Dwight Howard(notes), who averaged 25.8 points and 13 rebounds in the series.

Looking to take care of that problem, Cleveland traded for O’Neal in June and he insisted the Cavaliers would no longer need to double-team Howard. While coach Mike Brown wasn’t committing to O’Neal’s game plan, he was hoping for a better outcome.

“They’re a very good, well-coached team that presented problems for us (last year),” he said. “Hopefully it will be different this year.”

O’Neal, then with Phoenix, and Howard faced each other once last season. Howard had 19 points in Orlando’s 111-99 home win on March 3, but he was held to only seven rebounds - his second-lowest total.

“He’s young, agile and active,” O’Neal said, “but nothing I haven’t seen before.”

Utah Jazz vs Boston Celtics

Utah (3-4) at Boston (7-1)

The Boston Celtics gutted out a win over the weekend despite playing for the fourth time in five nights. Now, the Celtics are rested—and that could spell trouble for the Utah Jazz.

Returning to the court for the first time in four days, the Eastern Conference-leading Celtics look to continue their impressive start Wednesday when they host a Utah club seeking consecutive wins for the first time this season.

The Celtics (7-1) saw their unbeaten run come to an end Friday with a 110-103 home loss to Western Conference-leading Phoenix. That was the third game in four nights for Boston, which proceeded to travel to New Jersey for another game Saturday night.

The weary Celtics didn’t look particularly sharp - shooting 44.9 percent from the floor and scoring a season low - but forced 23 turnovers and outscored the short-handed Nets 27-15 in the fourth quarter to escape with an 86-76 victory.

“I didn’t think we had a lot in the tank,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said. “I could see that, that’s why I sat our starters long stretches (Saturday). I was just trying to milk the game as long as I could get it and then play at the end, and we had enough to win.”

With the fourth-oldest roster in the league - the “Big Three” of Kevin Garnett(notes), Paul Pierce(notes) and Ray Allen(notes) and sixth man Rasheed Wallace(notes) are all 32 or older - the Celtics may tire more easily than many teams. When fully rested, though, there may be no team better. In 2008-09, Boston was 16-2 following two or more days off, matching the champion Lakers for the best such record in the league.

Jordan taps Wade to wear 25th anniversary shoe

MIAMI (AP)—Dwyane Wade(notes) pleaded for years to join the Jordan Brand family, wanting to wear the shoe his idol made famous.

His persistence is being rewarded.

When Jordan Brand makes its long-awaited release of the Air Jordan 2010 in February to commemorate the popular line’s 25th anniversary, Wade will debut the shoe. Hand-picked for the role by Michael Jordan himself, the Miami Heat guard called it “a huge honor.”

“I was in awe, because I know what it means to not only be a part of Jordan Brand but really represent Michael on the court in the shoe he would wear,” Wade told The Associated Press. “Very excited, to say the least.”

The shoe will be launched nationwide Feb. 13 and will carry a retail price of $170. That coincides with All-Star weekend near Dallas and is four days before Jordan’s 47th birthday. It’s unknown if Wade will wear the shoe beforehand, say in Miami’s marquee Christmas Day game at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks.

Details of the arrangement were released to the AP, hours before a formal announcement Wednesday evening in Miami.

“The celebration of the Air Jordan 2010 and our 25th anniversary are the pinnacle of a year full of milestones for me,” Jordan said in a statement Wednesday. “With each shoe, consumers have pushed me to take the next Air Jordan beyond their wildest imagination.”

This was beyond Wade’s imagination, anyway.

He spent six years wearing Converse apparel, then made the switch to Jordan Brand in July. (Both are owned by Nike.) Details of his contract with Jordan Brand were not disclosed, although it was certain to at least match the remaining three years at $6 million annually left on his Converse deal.

Jordan Brand spokeswoman Terri Hines said Wade is the first pitchman for the Air Jordan other than Jordan himself.

It’s the latest notch in Wade’s business world: He also has strong deals with T-Mobile and Gatorade.

“One thing I understood coming over to the brand, it’s a team,” Wade said. “I’m fortunate enough to be able to be in a spot with guys like Chris Paul(notes), Carmelo Anthony(notes), Derek Jeter, all those guys. We all have a role to play. And I’m going to play the role that they signed me up for and hopefully I do the best I can.”

This arrangement had been kept under wraps for months. Wade told only few people, including teammate Quentin Richardson(notes), who like Wade is a Chicago native who grew up idolizing Jordan’s play with the Bulls.

Richardson has worn the Jumpman line throughout his NBA career.

“I think it meant the world to him, truthfully,” Richardson said. “Us being from Chicago, I don’t think people understand. … We adored M.J. We watched every move he made. I think for us guys, it made a big difference. And even before he came over to Jordan, Dwyane would wear it. He’d come over to my house and get stuff all the time.”

Aligning himself even closer to Jordan is as big a perk as being able to wear the Air Jordans, Wade said.

“Before this, our relationship was kind of on the basis of seeing him and still being in awe of the person I grew up watching,” Wade said. “Now I can e-mail, call him, all these lines of communication. So I think it’s kind of cool. He responds back to me a lot quicker now than he used to.”

In Pacquiao, a fighter like no other

LAS VEGAS (AP)—The best little fighter you will probably ever see had the seat of honor on the bus carrying him to his grand arrival at the MGM Grand casino. Manny Pacquiao had some more promoting to do, some more hands to shake, some more fans to meet.

This is boxing, and every sale counts. Pacquiao has been doing it long enough to understand that the more people who buy his pay-per-view fight with Miguel Cotto, the more his guaranteed $13 million purse goes up.

You get the feeling, though, that he might be doing it even if it didn’t make him an extra dime.

“I’m enjoying it,” Pacquiao said as the bus passes a not-so-ancient pyramid on the Las Vegas Strip. “I never thought I would be this popular in the United States.”

In the stairwell just in front of him, a cameraman tries to keep his balance as he films the fighter. The footage likely will show up on the final HBO “24/7” show that will air Friday, the night before Pacquiao gets down to his real work against Cotto.

I got the seat next to Pacquiao, which didn’t make me the most popular person with his vast entourage, who clamor daily for the champ’s attention. There were so many of them they nearly filled the bus Tuesday as it took the Pacquiao camp from its base at the Mandalay Bay to the hotel where a few thousand people were waiting to give him a raucous welcome.

Still, it was a chance to get a few minutes alone with him—or as alone as anyone can get with Pacquiao. A few minutes to try to understand how he stays so calm while chaos swirls around him. A few minutes in a very different kind of Mannywood that a certain baseball player would never understand.

“I’m a very friendly person,” Pacquiao said, condensing things to just a few words as he tries to explain his popularity. “I’m nice to everybody.”

Perhaps too nice at times. In his native Philippines, where he is revered for his success inside the ring and his generosity outside of it, Pacquiao gives away money and sends kids to school on scholarships. After a recent typhoon, he bought wood so coffins could be built.

“The Philippines has only one social welfare system, and it’s Manny Pacquiao,” promoter Bob Arum said.

The Philippines also has only one star. Pacquiao’s face is everywhere, singing on TV with his band, promoting his action-figure movie that opens next month. He plans to run for Congress next year, and there’s talk of him becoming president one day.

Did I mention he’s also the best pound-for-pound fighter in the game?

He gave a beating to Oscar De La Hoya, made him quit on his stool. He followed that by barely breaking a sweat in flattening Ricky Hatton.

He’s fought in six weight divisions and won six titles, and now he’s winning over the hearts of the most hardened fight fans.

“For me, boxing is kind of entertainment,” Pacquiao said. “You have to entertain people. You have to earn their respect.”

Pacquiao plans to do just that Saturday night when he takes on the once-beaten Cotto, of Puerto Rico, in a 145-pound fight that could set up a megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. On paper it shapes up as perhaps his toughest fight yet, but fights are held on canvas, not paper.

Pacquiao has prepared well, sparring endless rounds until trainer Freddie Roach begs him to quit. Still, there is time to entertain actors in Roach’s Hollywood gym, and time to croon along with the house band on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” something far more nerve-racking than getting hit in the face.

There also is time for the entourage, many of whom have been sleeping in hideaway beds in Pacquiao’s 60th floor hotel suite. House rules are spelled out in signs on the wall that impose a 9 p.m. curfew and prohibit ringing the bell on the champ’s bedroom door. There are also visiting hours for friends, relatives and fans—8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., tickets required.

Roach remembers the day Pacquiao walked into his gym eight years ago looking for a new trainer.

“We did a round with the mitts and he went back to his people to tell them he had found a trainer,” Roach said. “I went back to my people and told them we had found a great fighter.”

The partnership has blossomed beyond their wildest expectations. Pacquiao is fighting for millions of dollars every time he laces up the gloves, and Roach is becoming a different kind of star in Hollywood.

They are looking out the window as the bus pulls into the MGM. A beaming Arum is waiting to greet his fighter, while excited fans jostle each other inside the entrance, trying to get a picture or glimpse of the champ.

Pacquiao, wearing shades, follows a security team through the middle of it all, seemingly unfazed. He’s smaller than most of the people around him, but he cuts a large figure.

“Forget about boxing for a moment,” Roach said. “I’ve never seen anyone like him anywhere.”
