Umaga dead at age 36

Eddie Fatu, best known as Umaga from his days in WWE, died this evening in a Houston hospital following a heart attack. He was 36.

Fatu was a part of the famed wrestling Samoans, whose lineage includes brothers Sam (better known as Tama of The Islanders) and Solofa Jr. (Rikishi Fatu), cousin Matt Anoa'i, whom Fatu tagged with in WWE as "Three Minute Warning" (Fatu was known as Jamal at the time). His uncles were the Wild Samoans -- Afa and Sika, who trained him in the sport.

Fatu got his start in the then WWF in a briefly-run angle involving Rikishi (then known solely as Fatu) along with Matt, but the two soon were sent to the company's developmental system. The two also took time to hone their skills in Japan's FMW promotion.

In the early 2000s, the duo, perhaps known best as The Island Boyz during their developmental time, were brought into WWE as Three Minute Warning. Acting as enforcers for Eric Bischoff along with Rico (Rico Constantino), Fatu and Anoa'i were presented as fearsome individuals who would attack superstars when "three minutes" were referenced in promos. The duo lasted approximately one year in WWE before Fatu was released amid rumours of a bar fight.

After being dismissed from WWE, Fatu soon resurfaced under the name Ekmo. He would spend time in the upstart TNA Wrestling and overseas with All-Japan Pro Wrestling. It wouldn't be long, however, before he would be brought back to WWE, this time as the Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga.

Managed by Armando Alejandro Estrada, Umaga climbed the ladder in WWE extremely quickly after re-debuting in April 2006. On his first night, Umaga attacked Ric Flair and would soon find himself in the ring with the likes of Shawn Michaels and Triple H. Bedecked in warrior-like facepaint and covered in tattoos, Umaga was a fierce and unpredictable competitor in the ring. His path of destruction in WWE led him to multiple WWE Championship matches against John Cena in late 2006 and early 2007.

"The Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga, has pretty well run roughshod through the company," Estrada told SLAM! Wrestling in January 2007. "He's taken out everybody he's been in the ring with -- with the exception of the champ, who's next on the list -- nobody's been able to score any kind of a victory over him."

Eventually, Umaga would gain control of the Intercontinental title and had his most publicized match at WrestleMania 23. In this bout, Umaga represented Vince McMahon in a match against Bobby Lashley , seconded by Donald Trump. The man who each wrestler stood in the ring for put his hair on the line, and after Umaga's defeat, it would be McMahon who was shaved bald.

Following this peak, Umaga continued to be a top-flight superstar, mixing in a series of bouts that pitted McMahon against Lashley. Eventually, Estrada was dropped from the mini-group and Umaga ventured out on his own.

Throughout this time, the Intercontinental title traded hands between Umaga and Santino Marella, and Jeff Hardy would also frequently face off against the Samoan in a series of highlight bouts.

Though Umaga's push in WWE was overall consistent, his outside-the-ring activities cost him time from the ring, and ultimately his job with WWE. Fatu was one of the WWE superstars named in the infamous Sports Illustrated article as purchasing online pharmaceuticals, a violation of the WWE's Wellness Policy. He was suspended once for this, and then released after he was failed testing a second time and refused treatment in a rehabilitation facility.

WWE posted a statement about Fatu's death on its website: "WWE would like to express its deepest condolences to Mr. Fatu’s family, friends and fans on his tragic passing. Mr. Fatu was under contract with WWE at various time periods and most recently performed under the name 'Umaga.' Mr. Fatu's contract was terminated on June 11, 2009."

Umaga had most recently been a part of the Hulkamania tour in Australia, and had been rumoured at one point to be returning to WWE.

PGMA declares Martial Law in Maguindanao

Military, police raid house of Andal Sr. anew

MANILA (7th UPDATE) - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo officially declared martial law in the province of Maguindanao on Saturday morning.

Mangudadatus: Martial law to speed up justice

Ampatuans cry foul over police 'invitations'

Maguindanao citizens feel chill of martial law declaration

Ampatuan clan heads arrested

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita announced Proclamation No. 1959 proclaiming a state of martial law and suspending the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in the province of Maguindanao, except for certain areas identified as bailiwicks of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The declaration of martial law will lead to the arrests without warrants of other members of the Ampatuan family who have been linked to the November 23 massacre.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Victor Ibrado announced that joint police and military teams have taken into custody Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr. and his son, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan.

Ibrado said Ampatuan Sr. was brought to a hospital in Davao City while the ARMM governor was brought to General Santos City.

There are now three Ampatuans under government custody, including Datu Unsay town Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., who has been charged with 25 counts of murder for the massacre.

The carnage, where 57 innocent civilians were killed, drew both local and international condemnation. It was allegedly led by Ampatuan Jr., who is already detained at the National Bureau of Investigation.

Ermita said President Arroyo decided to declare martial law because "heavily armed groups in the province of Maguidanao have established positions to resist govenrment troops, thereby depriving the executive of its powers and prerogatives to enforce the laws of the land and to maintain public order and safety."

The declaration added that despite the state of emergency declared last November 14, peace and order in the province continued to deteriorate "to the extent that local judicial system and other government mechanisms are not functioning."

Government sources, who declined to be named, earlier told abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak on Friday that martial law will take effect Saturday in Maguindanao.

President Arroyo, also commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, reportedly approved the order Thursday night.

While martial law is in effect, Lt. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer, Armed Forces' Eastern Mindanao Command chief, will take over as the provincial military governor.

Ibrado said there are at least 4,000 military troops already deployed in the province to enforce martial law.

No confirmation on Friday

Asked for comment on Friday evening, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman Maj. Randolph Cabangbang said their unit "has not received any order for implementation."

Armed Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner said the report was not true, while Presidential Adviser on Mindanao Affairs Jesus Dureza said he will get back with the media "if there's definite word."

"Usually, martial law declaration is not announced until action starts on the ground. Otherwise, the purpose and objective is lost," he said in a text message.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said he will await the report of the President to Congress, which is required by the Constitution.

Col. Leo Cresente Ferrer, acting commander of the 601st Brigade, said it was the first time he had heard news of a martial law declaration in Maguindanao. He added that he did not see the need for it since the military has everything under control.

Congress may not be able to convene

When previously asked about martial law in the south, House Speaker Prospero Nograles, said last Monday (not Friday as we earlier reported): "This issue must be recommended by the National Security cluster group and the military on the ground to enable the president to correctly assess the situation."

Nograles said Congress may find it hard to convene and assess the declaration of martial law.

Under the Constitution, "Congress, voting jointly, by a vote of at least a majority of all its Members in regular or special session, may revoke such proclamation or suspension, which revocation shall not be set aside by the President."

The charter also states that on the president's initiative, Congress may also "extend such proclamation or suspension for a period to be determined by the Congress, if the invasion or rebellion shall persist and public safety requires it."

Nograles said: "Martial law can be impractical at this time as it requires the approval of Congress, which will most likely have difficulty mustering a quorum due to the holidays and the election season. Even if we have a quorum, I don't think our senators and congressmen will favor this because it will certainly cause public uproar which can endanger their reelection bid."

"A limited state of emergency in Maguindanao and nearby provinces is sufficient to address the problem related to the Maguindanao massacre," he added.

5 other Ampatuans

On Friday, Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera said they will issue subpoenas to Ampatuan Sr. and four other members of his clan for a preliminary investigation into their possible involvement in the massacre.

Devanadera said the other clan members who will be summoned to appear in the preliminary investigations are Datu Ulo Ampatuan, Mamasapano town Mayor Bahnarin Ampatuan, and vice-mayors Kanor Ampatuan and Tony Kenis Ampatuan.

Only Ampatuan Sr.'s son and namesake, Datu Unsay town Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., has been arrested and detained at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) headquarters in Manila.

Ampatuan Jr. has been charged with 25 counts of murder.

Martial law under 1987 Charter

Under the 1987 Constitution, the declaration of martial law will suspend the writ of habeas corpus, which means some citizens may be arrested without warrants.

Section 18 of the Charter states: "The President shall be the Commander-in-Chief of all armed forces of the Philippines and whenever it becomes necessary, he may call out such armed forces to prevent or suppress lawless violence, invasion or rebellion. In case of invasion or rebellion, when the public safety requires it, he may, for a period not exceeding sixty days, suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus or place the Philippines or any part thereof under martial law."

However, the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus only applies to persons charged for "rebellion" or offenses connected with an invasion.

"The suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall apply only to persons judicially charged for rebellion or offenses inherent in, or directly connected with, invasion," the Constitution also says.

It also adds: "During the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus, any person thus arrested or detained shall be judicially charged within three days, otherwise he shall be released."

Danny Green stops Roy Jones Jr. in first round

SYDNEY -- Australian Danny Green stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the first round of their IBO world cruiserweight title fight Wednesday, preventing the 40-year-old American from claiming his ninth title across five weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight.

The 36-year-old Green retained his title and improved to 28-3 with his technical knockout over Jones at the Acer Arena, in the American's first professional fight on foreign soil in his 20-year career.

It was only Jones' sixth loss since 1989, along with 54 wins, 40 by knockout.

Green floored Jones with a right hand to the head after one minute. Green moved in to apply more pressure, and following a series of blows, English referee Howard Foster stopped the bout after just 122 seconds.

Jones offered no excuses for a defeat which could signal the end of his career.

"We don't make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny," Jones said.

Green was almost apologetic for handing such a defeat to one of his boxing role models.

"He's one of the greatest fighters of all time and the opportunity to fight him in Australia, thanks, Roy Jones Jr.," Green told the crowd.

"I almost feel bad doing that, that almost hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring. He's a bloody legend."

After nearly a one-hour delay following an undercard bout, Jones entered the arena to mild applause. But Green, with the Australian band Men at Work's song "Down Under" playing, entered the ring to an ovation moments later.

"I didn't surprise myself," said Green.

Green won the IBO cruiserweight title in Biloxi, Miss., in August with a victory over Argentina's Julio Cesar Dominguez on the undercard to Jones' NABO light heavyweight championship win over Jeff Lacy.

Jones had been stopped just twice in his career, by Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson, but Green warned ahead of the fight that he could end the Sydney fight early.

"I won't name which punch, but there's one punch, if I hit him clean with it, he is going to be knocked out for a week," Green said. "His speed can baffle me, but my power -- it can hospitalize someone. My fists are like bricks."

Green has never been stopped, although he was knocked down but not out by Argentina's Omar Gonzalez in 2004.

The Australian twice lost bids for the WBC super middleweight title to Markus Beyer -- one by disqualification and the other in a split decision. He retired temporarily in March 2008 before making a comeback in April this year.

Jones, who has eight belts across four divisions from middleweight to heavyweight, was a strong betting favorite.

Green weighed in at nearly 179 pounds while Jones was at just over 179.

Final Answer: Iverson back with 76ers
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Allen Iverson’s(notes) first stint with the Philadelphia 76ers ended with the team yanking his nameplate off his locker and editing him out of video highlights before he was even traded.

The Sixers might want to find him a new locker and cue up some clips. Philly fans, pull out that No. 3 jersey from the closet. A.I. is a Sixer again.

In a move that appeared farfetched after their acrimonious split in 2006, the 76ers reunited with the briefly retired Iverson on Wednesday in a move designed to spike sagging attendance and fill in for the injured Lou Williams.

Coach Eddie Jordan said Iverson likely will start and stay the entire season.

“I told him I would like for him to start, and that’s where it sort of ended,” Jordan said. “And he was really like a kid at Christmas.”

Iverson will make his debut Monday night at home against Denver—one of three teams he’s called home since leaving Philly. The 10-time All-Star-turned-journeyman is determined to prove he still has something to offer in that No. 3 jersey. His new boss is betting Iverson can help the staggering Sixers make a push in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

“He’s like a rock star,” team president Ed Stefanski said.

And he’s back for his encore.

He antagonized his coaches and opponents his first time around. Perhaps humbled, he signed after being reduced to a bench player in Denver and Memphis and forced to accept the veteran’s minimum salary to return to his NBA roots.

“If there’s going to be a chance for him to do it and make it work, there’s no doubt in my mind Philadelphia is the best spot for him to try and do it,” Stefanski said.

Stefanski took a low risk financially to sign Iverson, but possibly derailed the long-term improvement of a slumping team tying to build around a core of young players. Rookie Jrue Holiday(notes), who started at point guard for Williams, heads to the bench, and Jordan’s Princeton offense could hit the scrap heap.

The Iverson-to-Philly talks were underway once Williams was lost for eight weeks with a broken jaw. Stefanski said he never would have considered a second act for Iverson had it not been for the injury.

Iverson’s reps asked Stefanski about a possible comeback last week. Iverson, his agent and business manager met with Stefanski and Jordan on Monday to jump-start contract talks.

Iverson was offered a one-year, non-guaranteed contract Tuesday, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the talks were private. He accepted the deal early Wednesday.

The Sixers would owe just under $650,000 if they guarantee his contract for the remainder of the season on Jan. 10.

“The whole situation wasn’t about the contract and the money,” Iverson’s agent, Leon Rose, told The Associated Press. “It was about the opportunity and the chance to come to Philadelphia.”

The Sixers (5-13) had lost seven straight entering Wednesday night’s game at Oklahoma City. The losing and lack of a marquee name have them buried in 29th in the NBA in attendance.

Sixers VP of business operations Lara Price declined to say how many tickets were purchased for Monday’s homecoming, but said: “We have seen a big jump in ticket sales as a result of today’s announcement.”

Sixers management insisted Iverson’s signing was strictly a basketball move and not to necessarily boost the gate.

It had the city buzzing. Fans flooded sports radio stations to talk Iverson, TV stations cut in with live updates, and Internet message board posters were roused with his addition.

Jordan, speaking at Wednesday morning’s shootaround, was thrilled to have Iverson.

“Without really seeing him on the floor, I would like to compare him to Brett Favre, a guy who people think is too old to play and he’s almost having an MVP year,” Jordan said. “That’s off the top of my head. When I woke up this morning, I said, ‘Maybe he can be that.’ It’s not a big maybe. I think he can be that.”

Except for a brief flirtation with the New York Knicks, no other organization was seriously interested in signing Iverson.

Iverson, nicknamed “The Answer,” regularly played 40 minutes when he was NBA MVP in 2001 and led the Sixers to the finals. Philadelphia hasn’t won a playoff series since 2003.

In 10 seasons with the Sixers, Iverson posted the highest scoring average in team history (28.1), was second on the points list (19,583) and holds the record for 3-pointers (877). He was a seven-time All-Star, won four scoring titles and two All-Star game MVPs.

Iverson’s last game with Philadelphia was Dec. 6, 2006, in Chicago. He refused to play the fourth quarter, had a severe falling out with former coach Maurice Cheeks and was banished from the team. Chairman Ed Snider and former GM Billy King sent Iverson home while they worked on trading their superstar.

He was eventually sent to Denver as part of the Andre Miller(notes) deal, and bounced to Detroit before landing in Memphis.

Snider has publicly welcomed him back.

“When he left our organization I did say, ‘We’re gonna trade him,’ but that was only after he requested to be traded,” Snider said in a statement. “This is an opportunity for him to shine here in Philadelphia, where it all started, with the most positive outcome.”

The 6-foot Iverson played three games this season with Memphis before taking a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. He was waived after the two sides agreed to part ways.

Iverson will get a look at another former team after playing Denver. The Sixers play at home Dec. 9 against Detroit.

Sixers leading scorer Andre Iguodala(notes), a former Iverson teammate, said he gave management the OK to make the move.

“That was pretty easy,” he said. “I think all the guys on our team, whether they’ve played with him or not, realize what he can do. He can play.”

Iverson was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 draft, but his 10 turbulent seasons in Philadelphia were marred by rants about practice, run-ins with former coach Larry Brown, arrests and a failed rap career.

In one infamous blowup at the end of the 2002 season, he repeated the word “practice” nearly 20 times during a rambling monologue.

“We had, at times, a rocky road with Allen Iverson, but we also had a fantastic run with Allen,” Peter Luukko, COO of Comcast-Spectacor, which owns the 76ers and Flyers, told The AP. “The expectations with Allen have changed dramatically. We’re not looking for Allen to individually lead this team the way he has in the past.”

Iverson has a career average of 27 points in 889 games over 14 seasons, and is tied for the fifth-highest scoring average in NBA history. He ranks third among active players.

“It’s a great challenge, and I think it’s a motivational aspect to it, too,” Jordan said. “Guys are going to be jacked up. He’s a winner, he’s an assassin on the floor and that sort of thing is contagious.”

AP Sports Writer Jeff Latzke in Oklahoma City contributed to this report.

Posted Dec 1 2009 6:41PM

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers are closer to a reunion.
A person with knowledge of the contract talks says the Sixers offered a one-year, non-guaranteed contract to Iverson on Tuesday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract talks had not been made public.

Iverson, his agent and business manager met with team president Ed Stefanski, coach Eddie Jordan and two other members of the organization Monday during the first formal meeting between the Sixers and their former MVP.

Iverson announced his retirement last week after an ill-fated stint with the Memphis Grizzlies. The 10-time All-Star was NBA MVP in 2001 when he led the Sixers to the NBA finals.

Another person with knowledge of the deal, who also spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the talks had not been made public, said Iverson's decision should come Wednesday.

The person says the 76ers are taking a chance on Iverson because he's the best free-agent guard available and the financial commitment is minimal. The Sixers would owe just under $650,000 if they guarantee his contract for the remainder of the season on Jan. 10.

"What is the downside if you can cut him any time you want?" the person said.

Iverson would still need to undergo a physical before the deal is complete. As of Tuesday night, the Sixers had not heard back from Iverson's agent Leon Rose.

Iverson announced his intention to retire last week after no other team expressed an interest is signing the four-time scoring champion. The 6-foot Iverson played three games this season with Memphis before taking a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. He was waived after the two sides agreed to part ways.

He's on the brink of getting a second chance with the Sixers(5-13), who have lost seven straight entering Wednesday night's game at Oklahoma City and need Iverson to spark sagging ticket sales and their playoff chances.

This reconciliation was once thought foolish after their acrimonious split three years ago. Iverson's last game with Philadelphia was Dec. 6, 2006 in Chicago. He refused to play the fourth quarter and was banished from the team two days later. He was eventually traded to Denver as part of the Andre Miller deal, and bounced to Detroit before landing in Memphis.

The Sixers finish their four-game road trip Saturday against the Charlotte Bobcats and Iverson's former nemesis, coach Larry Brown.

Brown said Tuesday he was upset that Iverson's best option was a non-guaranteed deal.

"I get worried about that message, but I also admire Philly for giving him a chance," he said. "That's more meaningful for me. I look at a guy that scored 20,000 points and played hurt and did so much and now he's got to play for a non-guaranteed contract, that's pretty troubling for me."

If Iverson accepts the offer, his likely debut would come Monday night at home against Denver. In a double-dose of intriguing timing, the Sixers play at home Dec. 9 against Detroit.

Perhaps Iverson will show his former teams that he still has something left in the No. 3 jersey.

Or, the Nuggets and Pistons will see they made the right choice to move on without the controversial guard.

CSNPhilly.com first reported the offer.

Memphis Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley told the AP on Tuesday that he spent almost an hour on the phone with Stefanski before his meeting with Iverson.

"I told him I thought Allen had the game and I thought he would be a positive contribution to his team and was sorry it didn't work out with us. I thought to get back with Philadelphia, it was a good chance it would work out for them. I feel extremely happy about it," Heisley said.

"Quite frankly, I'm sorry that we couldn't work it out between us and Allen. I don't feel duped. I don't feel upset. I quite frankly arranged for the severance, which we could've stopped, which would've stopped him from being able to play for anybody. I did it so he would have an opportunity to go play."

The 34-year-old Iverson began an indefinite leave of absence on Nov. 7 to deal with a personal issue.

Heisley said he knew exactly what the personal matter was, but he refused to discuss that issue.

"I hope it's cleared up," he said.

Heisley believed Iverson would return at first, then said he thinks Iverson did not want to rejoin the Grizzlies for reasons that could have included retirement or possible interest from other teams.

"I hope he comes back and I hope he has a great career with them," Heisley said.

Pacquiao OKs May 13 bout vs Mayweather

Sugar Ray Leonard vs Floyd Mayweather Sr Video (Full Fight) Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Arturo Gatti Video (Full Fight)

Z gorres collapsed moment after the winner was announced

Pacquiao-Mayweather ahead of the November Yahoo! Sports

With each man likely to be paid as if he were a Wall Street CEO, money shouldn’t be a factor in preventing a bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. sometime in the spring of 2010 in the ultimate boxing showdown.

The fight will undoubtedly be the largest-grossing bout in history and might be the most anticipated since Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier met for the first time at New York’s Madison Square Garden on March 8, 1971.

If a fight against each other is not the next bout for Mayweather and Pacquiao, each ought to retire. The public and media outrage will be enormous and the very credibility of the sport will be threatened.
Rarely does the public have an appetite for a bout like it does this one. You have two men in the same division, each with a stake to the mythical status as boxing’s best fighter while each is in his prime.
They’re both also at the height of their earning powers and will make so much money they’ll make Alex Rodriguez envious.
The repercussions will be enormous if the bout is not made. Boxing will look like a second-rate sport – and deservedly so – if the biggest fight and the one the fans most want to see is not made. “Consolation” bouts like ones pitting Mayweather against Shane Mosley or Pacquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez, simply won’t cut it.
Mayweather, in particular, will be crucified if a deal isn’t reached. Fairly or unfairly (depending upon whom you speak to), Mayweather has been ridiculed for avoiding tough competition since 2003. Mayweather moved up to lightweight in 2002 and instantly took on Jose Luis Castillo, who at the time was regarded as the world’s best 135-pounder.
Mayweather defeated Castillo in controversial fashion in their first bout that year, then beat him clearly in their second. Since then, however, Mayweather has been questioned about his choice of opponents.
He’s fought 11 times since 2003 and Marquez, whom he routed in September, is the only one of those who was widely regarded as one of the world’s 10 best pound-for-pound fighters.
There was, though, a problem with that. Even though Marquez was ranked No. 2 by many polls, including Yahoo! Sports, going into the Mayweather fight, he was moving up from lightweight to face Mayweather at welterweight. Thus the win didn’t carry the same significance for many that it would have had he beaten a legitimate, world-class welterweight like Pacquiao did with Cotto.
If promoters Bob Arum of Top Rank and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy are unable to come to terms for a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, the brunt of the blame, whether it’s deserved or not, will fall on Mayweather’s shoulders. He’ll look like he’s running again.
But Pacquiao needs to fight Mayweather, too. He’s had to deal with questions about each of his past four opponents, as he’s made his march up from the super featherweight division.
He needs to defeat an in-his-prime star like Mayweather to end all doubts.
Bottom line, each needs the other and boxing needs the fight.
Pacquiao’s dynamic 12th-round stoppage of Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena resonated with the 31 voters in the Yahoo! Sports poll. Pacquiao was slightly ahead of Mayweather in October’s poll, though Mayweather actually received two more first-place votes.
After Pacquiao’s destruction of Cotto, though, it became a landslide for the Filipino superstar. Pacquiao received 27 first-place votes among the 31 cast. The other four went to Mayweather.
It’s Pacquiao-Mayweather ahead of the November Yahoo! Sports poll, and it’s likely to stay that way until they meet – hopefully – next year.

Allen Iverson Top Ten Plays (Career Highlights)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Larry Brown has a message for Allen Iverson(notes): don’t give up.

Iverson’s former coach said Friday he thinks the 10-time All-Star “still has a passion to play” and shouldn’t retire. An online report this week indicated Iverson had decided to end his career after receiving little interest from NBA teams.

Brown, who coached Iverson in Philadelphia when he was voted league MVP in 2001 while leading the 76ers to the NBA finals, said he’s been trying to get in touch with him.

“Anybody that knows him understands how much he loves to play,” said Brown, now coaching the Charlotte Bobcats.

Orlando Magic vs Atlanta Hawks

Orlando (11-4) at Atlanta (11-3)

The Orlando Magic won the Southeast Division by 12 games last season, never really needing to worry about their lead after the beginning of January.

The Atlanta Hawks think they’ll stick around much longer this time.

The Hawks have the best record in the Eastern Conference through the season’s first month, and they’ll get their first crack at the defending conference champions on Thanksgiving night at Philips Arena.

Orlando (11-4) held a 3 1/2-game lead over Atlanta on Jan. 1, but the Hawks couldn’t get any closer as the Magic cruised to the Southeast title on their way to the NBA finals.

Massacre suspect Andal Ampatuan Jr. surrenders

Prime suspect in Philippine massacre surrenders

AMPATUAN, Philippines – Authorities say a scion of a powerful clan suspected in the massacre of 57 people in an election caravan in the southern Philippines has turned himself in.

The dead from Monday's massacre include the wife, family and dozens of journalists and supporters of a gubernatorial candidate who wanted to challenge the rival Ampatuan clan, which has ruled the lawless province of Maguindanao unopposed for years.

Army Lt. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer says Andal Ampatuan Jr., a town mayor who allegedly stopped the convoy with four police commanders and dozens of police and pro-government militiamen, surrendered himself to presidential peace adviser Jesus Dureza in the provincial capital.

Ampatuan's family is denying the allegations of his involvement in the slayings.

AMPATUAN, Philippines (AP) — Officials found 11 more bodies Wednesday at the site of an attack on an election caravan in the south, bringing the death toll in the massacre to 57, and police said they are investigating a member of a powerful clan allied with the president's administration.

Six of the bodies in southern Maguindanao province were discovered in a large pit buried alongside three vehicles, and five were found in a mass grave a few miles (kilometers) off the main highway.

The vehicles — a sedan and two vans — were crushed by a large backhoe that ran over and buried them, investigator Jose Garcia said. Police were trying to determine if the vehicles were part of the caravan.

The dead from Monday's massacre included the wife and two sisters of gubernatorial candidate Ismael Mangudadatu and 18 Filipino journalists accompanying the caravan. It is the largest number of reporters killed in a single attack anywhere in the world, according to media groups.

Police identified the prime suspect as Andal Ampatuan Jr., a scion of the powerful Ampatuan clan led by the former provincial governor. The clan, which has ruled the province unopposed for eight years, helped President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her allies win the 2004 presidential and 2007 senatorial elections by delivering crucial votes.

The military also said it will disarm two government-armed civilian militia companies, or about 200 men, in the province. The militia are meant to act as an auxiliary force to the military and police in fighting rebels and criminals but often serve as a private security force.

The killings provoked outrage beyond the Philippines, with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and media and human rights watchdogs urging Arroyo to punish the attackers.

Mangudadatu, after receiving death threats, had sent his wife and relatives to submit his candidacy. He wanted to challenge Andal Ampatuan Jr., who serves as a town mayor and whose family has ruled the province with an iron fist backed up by private armies and legions of bodyguards.

Mangudadatu said four people whom he refused to identify told him the convoy was stopped by dozens of gunmen loyal to Ampatuan. Police said they are investigating reports that Ampatuan, four police commanders, and dozens of police and pro-government militiamen were among the gunmen who blocked the convoy.

National Police Chief Jesus Versoza said the four commanders — including one provincial police chief — were relieved of their duties and confined to camp while being investigated.

Arroyo vowed justice for the victims and declared a national day of mourning.

"This is a supreme act of inhumanity that is a blight on our nation," she said in a statement. "The perpetrators will not escape justice. The law will haunt them until they are caught."

Arroyo declared a state of emergency in Maguindanao and a neighboring Sultan Kudarat province, sending extra troops and police. Troops set up checkpoints to confiscate illegal weapons, military spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner said.

The country's tourism secretary, Ace Durano, said in a statement that tourism spots frequented by travelers to the Philippines were unaffected.

Few think Arroyo will be able to restore the rule of law in the impoverished, lawless region that has been outside the central government's reach for generations, and where warlords backed by private armies go by their own rules. Maguindanao's acting governor is Sajid Ampatuan, another son of former Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., the clan's patriarch. Members of the family could not be reached for comment.

The clan helped deliver votes for the Arroyo administration in 2004 elections. Human Rights Watch expressed concern Wednesday that the administration's relationship with the family would hinder an impartial investigation.

Arroyo's ruling party, in an emergency meeting late Wednesday, expelled Ampatuan Sr. and his two sons.

Arroyo adviser Jesus Dureza said he met Tuesday with Andal Ampatuan Sr. and received assurances that his family would cooperate in the probe. Many throughout the Philippines expressed skepticism.

The U.S. Embassy in Manila condemned the killings. "Such barbaric acts violate the most fundamental principles of human rights and democracy," Ambassador Kristie Kenney said. "We strongly believe that a thorough, rapid, and transparent investigation must be conducted, and those responsible must be brought to swift justice."

Among the dead journalists was Alejandro "Bong" Reblando, 53, a former Associated Press stringer and the most senior in the group of reporters. Reblando, who was based in General Santos City, was a staffer for the Manila Bulletin daily newspaper.

He covered the southern Philippines for the AP from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, reporting on the Muslim separatist insurgency as well as local politics.

He is survived by his wife and seven children.

Dallas (10-4) at Houston (8-6)

In their last game, the Dallas Mavericks faded late against a team that was playing extremely short-handed.

That doesn’t bode well for their next contest against the well-rested Houston Rockets.

The Mavericks look to avoid suffering back-to-back losses for the first time this season Wednesday when they visit the Rockets, who haven’t played since Saturday.

Dallas (10-4) saw its five-game winning streak snapped in a 111-103 loss to Golden State on Tuesday. The Warriors used only six players due to injuries, but it was the Mavericks - who hadn’t played since Friday - who were the ones who struggled to close the game out. They led 98-89 but got outscored 22-5 the rest of the way.

Pacquiao tested clean following Nov. 14 TKO win over Cotto

NEW YORK (SI.COM) -- Seven-time world champion Manny Pacquiao tested clean following his Nov. 14 TKO over Miguel Cotto, SI.com has learned.

Pacquiao, who became the first boxer to win seven championships in as many weight classes, underwent urine tests twice -- before and after the fight -- and both came back negative, said Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. It's the the 10th time the Filipino has turned in clean tests in Nevada.

Immediately following Pacquiao's win over Cotto, fans inside the MGM Grand Arena pleaded for a megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who many regard as the top pound-for-pound fighter since his return in September. In response to the expected fanfare, Floyd Mayweather Sr. publicly accused Pacquiao of taking steroids.

Mayweather Sr., Floyd's father and trainer, told SI's Chris Mannix that he believed Pacquiao's ability to take Cotto's powerful shots and keep coming proved the champion was taking performance-enhancing substances. "I know Floyd is the best," said Mayweather Sr. "But when [your opponent] uses something illegal, even the best can get hurt."

Detroit Pistons vs Phoenix Suns

Detroit (5-8) at Phoenix (10-3

While the Phoenix Suns have generally looked strong in their climb to the top of the Western Conference, they’ve had some lackluster performances in their losses.

The Suns look to bounce back from one of those defeats and avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time this season Sunday when they host the Detroit Pistons, who are trying to snap a four-game skid.

After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004 last season, Phoenix (10-3) has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the league. With a potent offense led by Steve Nash(notes), the Suns have scored 100 or more points in each of their first 13 games and are tied with Dallas atop the West.

New Orleans Hornets vs Miami Heat

New Orleans (6-8) at Miami (7-5)

The Miami Heat have certainly cooled off after a strong start. Sub-par defensive play has been a major factor, and a meeting with the suddenly surging New Orleans Hornets might not help, either.

The Heat will try to halt a three-game losing streak Sunday night by beating the Hornets for the first time in nearly three years.

Miami (7-5) opened the season by winning six of seven, but have since lost four of five and their current losing streak matches their longest from last season.

Here’s one billion reasons why Manny Pacquiao should maximize his remaining potential earnings inside the ring.

Bob Arum, in a report by ESPN reveals Pacquiao will receive $22 million now that the official Pay-Per-View counting is about to be concluded.

Convert that to Philippine peso and that will translate to a whopping P1.3 billion based on yesterday’s 46.8 peso-dollar rate.

Atlanta Hawks vs New Orleans Hornets

Atlanta (11-2) at New Orleans (5-8)

One week ago, the surging Atlanta Hawks easily beat a New Orleans Hornets club struggling to find its footing under new head coach Jeff Bower.

Neither team has lost since.

Seeking their longest winning streak in 12 years, the Hawks visit New Orleans on Saturday night for a rematch with Bower’s revitalized Hornets.

Atlanta (11-2) hasn’t won its division since 1993-94, but currently owns the NBA’s best record thanks to its winning streak, which reached seven Friday night with a 105-103 home victory over Houston. Josh Smith(notes) had nine points - failing to reach double figures for only the second time this season - but scored the winning basket on a putback of a Mike Bibby(notes) miss with 0.7 seconds remaining.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Cleveland Cavaliers

Philadelphia (5-7) at Cleveland (9-4)

While the Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t about to rush back aging superstar Shaquille O’Neal(notes) from a shoulder injury, LeBron James(notes) is not letting a sore wrist slow him down.

Coming off his highest-scoring game of the season, James looks to help the Cavaliers win for the 10th time in 12 contests Saturday night when they host the struggling Philadelphia 76ers.

James banged his left wrist on the basket while dunking late in Wednesday’s 108-91 loss to Washington, but the injury didn’t seem to bother him much in Friday’s 105-95 win at Indiana. The reigning league MVP scored 10 of his season-high 40 points in the final 7:07, and also had nine rebounds and seven assists to help the Cavaliers (9-4) continue their surge after back-to-back losses to open the season.

Miami Heat vs Toronto Raptors

Miami (7-4) at Toronto (5-7)

Even Dwyane Wade(notes) endures stretches of poor shooting at times. He isn’t accustomed to poor games against the Toronto Raptors, though.

Wade struggled with his shot as the Miami Heat suffered consecutive losses for the first time this season, but he appears to have a good opportunity to end his problems in a matchup with the Raptors on Friday night.

Miami (7-4) has lost three of four after a fast start, with its star guard shooting 32.4 percent (12 for 37) over the last two games - a 100-87 loss to Oklahoma City on Tuesday night and a 105-90 defeat at Atlanta the following evening.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Indiana Pacers

Cleveland (8-4) at Indiana (5-4)

Already without Shaquille O’Neal(notes), the Cleveland Cavaliers don’t want to think about the possibility of LeBron James’(notes) sore wrist causing him to miss any time.

He’s caused enough of a headache for the Indiana Pacers of late.

James recorded two triple-doubles and a 47-point performance in his past four trips to Conseco Fieldhouse, and the Cavaliers hope the reigning MVP’s wrist won’t hinder him as they seek their 11th win in 12 games against the Pacers.

Golden State Warriors vs Boston Celtics

Golden State (3-7) at Boston (8-3)

The Boston Celtics don’t seem overly concerned about their first rough stretch of the season.

The Celtics look to avoid a third consecutive loss when they host the undermanned Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night.

Since opening the season with six straight wins, Boston (8-3) has dropped three of five and is trying to get back on track after its first back-to-back losses of the season. The Celtics fell 97-86 to Atlanta on Friday before losing 113-104 at Indiana on Saturday.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Washington Wizards

Cleveland (8-3) at Washington (2-7)

Injuries are mounting for Cleveland, but LeBron James(notes) is doing his part to help the Cavaliers overcome them.

With Shaquille O’Neal(notes) and Anderson Varejao(notes) likely sidelined again Wednesday night, the reigning NBA MVP will try to help the Cavaliers beat the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center for the first time in more than two years.

O’Neal has missed two games with a strained shoulder and wasn’t expected to travel to Washington with the team, and coach Mike Brown doesn’t think Varejao will be ready to return from a hip contusion to face the Wizards.

Golden State can only hope the return netted them some defensive help.

The acquisition of Raja Bell(notes) comes after the Warriors allowed a historic individual performance over the weekend, and they’ll have their hands full again Tuesday when they visit LeBron James(notes) and the Cleveland Cavaliers - who nearly became Jackson’s new team.

Pacquiao vs Cotto Philippines Crowd Reaction Videos

Pacquiao vs Cotto Philippines Crowd Reaction Video - Filipinos rejoiced over the stunning victory of Pacquiao, that briefly brought unity among army troops and guerrillas and grounded traffic to a halt in his Southeast Asian homeland.

Philippines citizen cheered as they watch the live satellite bout between Filipino boxing champ Manny Paquiao and the Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto for the light welterweight boxing title in various venues on Sunday November 15, 2009. Manny Pacquiao floored Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico in the second and third round of the 12-round welterweight title boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, before winning via stoppage at the last round.

Cinemas, restaurants, gymnasiums and other arenas in the country, aired live the boxing fight of the hometown folk hero Manny Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto Post Fight Press Conference

LAS VEGAS — The fight hasn't been made yet, and may not ever happen. But this city's casinos are already taking bets on who will win if the Philippines' Manny Pacquiao and American Floyd Mayweather Jr. ever get into the ring.

Pacquiao, coming off his dominating win over Miguel Cotto, opened as an 8-5 favorite at sports books operated by Station Casinos, and it didn't take long for bettors to take a side. Several $20,000 bets were put down on Mayweather, forcing the line down to 7-5 in the early going, said Art Manteris, the casino operator's vice president of sports book operations.

"It's been pretty decisive in the early going," Manteris said. "I think I made the line a little too high but that's the nature of the business."

Manteris said he made Pacquiao the favorite based largely on the public perception of his big win over Cotto. Most of the early bets, he said, came from professional handicappers, who thought the line was too high.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said he was ready to begin negotiations with Mayweather's promoter on a fight, while Mayweather issued a statement Monday saying he wanted to hear from Pacquiao himself that he really wants the fight.

"Tell Manny Pacquiao to be his own man and stop letting everyone, including his loudmouth trainer, talk for him," Mayweather said. "I am my own boss, speak for myself and tell it like it is. If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight me, all he has to do is step up to the plate and say it himself."

Pacquiao told The Associated Press last month he didn't think Mayweather wanted to fight him, and criticized the undefeated fighter for fighting too defensively and not trying to entertain fans.

His trainer, Freddie Roach, said after the Cotto fight that Pacquiao would be more than happy to fight Mayweather, but that Mayweather wasn't going to dictate the terms of the fight. Talks will likely be difficult, especially when it comes to what percentage of the revenues each fighter would receive.

The fight, though, has the possibility of becoming the richest ever and many in boxing assume that there is far too much money to be made for the fight not to happen.

"I think that's the fight the world wants to see," Roach said. "But if Floyd wants a 65-35 split (of the purse) he's not going to get it."

Assuming the fight can be made, it would likely take place next May. Las Vegas casinos would have the inside track on landing it, but there has been speculation that it could go somewhere like the new Dallas Cowboys stadium or even Yankee Stadium.

ESPN Interview After the Fight Pacquiao Discusses Win Over Cotto

Manny Pacquiao sits down with Brian Kenny to talk about his win over Miguel Cotto

Exclusive Floyd Mayweather Jr. Interview,”I’ll easily beat Manny Pacquiao” (Video)

Just after Manny Pacquiao stopped Miguel Cotto for his WBO welterweight title on Saturday night, Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. had an exclusive sit down interview with Sky Sports UK about a possible Manny Pacquiao fight.

Floyd commented on Manny’s recent victory of Miguel Cotto and doesn’t believe Manny Pacquiao has any versatility and is just a one dimensional fighter.

He believes Pacquiao doesn’t really want to fight him, and feels the world is forcing this fight on him because Manny had no comment when media men asked if he wanted to fight Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather also feels he is in a no win situation, because people will just discredit his win over Pacman especially since Manny has 3 losses and knocked out twice before, he feels people will have excuses already.

Houston Rockets vs Los Angeles Lakers

Houston (5-4) at Los Angeles (7-2)

The Los Angeles Lakers were fortunate to escape Houston with a victory in their first meeting, pulling out an overtime win despite not being at their best offensively.

The second half of their latest road performance unequivocally qualifies as their worst.

The Lakers look to bounce back from their most futile half in franchise history Sunday afternoon when they open a home-heavy stretch seeking their sixth straight regular-season win against the Houston Rockets.

Los Angeles (7-2) needed overtime to win both of its first two road games as Kobe Bryant(notes) averaged 36.0 points in a 101-98 win at Oklahoma City and a 103-102 escape at Houston on Nov. 3 and 4.

Through one half of the Lakers’ first road game since, it looked like they were headed for another tight finish. Bryant had 19 points in the first half as Los Angeles trailed Denver 58-56 on Friday.

A pair of free throws shortly before halftime would be the last points Bryant would score, however. The Lakers scored 23 points in the final 24 minutes - a franchise-low for a half - and Bryant was shut out in a half for the first time since April 11, 2004, as the Nuggets cruised to a 105-79 victory.

“They beat the hell out of us,” Bryant said. “… They executed extremely well and we tried to keep it within a manageable distance. We weren’t able to do that though and they broke us open pretty good.”

Toronto Raptors vs Phoenix Suns

Toronto (5-4) at Phoenix (8-2)

The Phoenix Suns’ strong play has been surprising to some. Another win over the Toronto Raptors, however, would hardly be unexpected.

The Suns, coming off their worst game during what has been an otherwise terrific start, look to beat the Raptors for the 11th straight time Sunday night.

Expectations weren’t very high after Phoenix (8-2) missed the playoffs last season. The Suns, though, have been one of the league’s biggest early surprises, with their only losses coming against last summer’s NBA finalists.

Phoenix fell 121-102 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. It lost 122-100 to Orlando on Nov. 4.

“Well two weeks ago we weren’t supposed to make the playoffs,” point guard Steve Nash(notes) said of the Suns’ critics. “You know, our team needs to look at this as a project. We are just trying to get better every day, and I think we are improving.”

Phoenix had its worst shooting game of the season versus the Lakers, making 36.5 percent of its attempts after hitting at least 45.5 percent in each of its first nine contests.

Still, Phoenix scored 100 points in its first 10 games for the first time since a 12-game run to start the 1990-91 season. The Suns seem likely to extend that run Sunday.
