Cavs won’t lack star power with Shaq, LeBron
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio – The lights abruptly shut off at the Cleveland Cavaliers’ practice facility Monday afternoon, leaving LeBron James(notes) to navigate the hallway in the dark. James wasted no time in assessing blame.
“That’s never happened in all these years,” James said. “Shaq comes and the lights are out.”
Electrical outage or not, there was no denying that James and the rest of the Cavaliers spent their first day of training camp standing in Shaquille O’Neal’s(notes) shadow. Even James, for all of his greatness, can’t eclipse Shaq’s mammoth personality.
“Shaq,” James said, “definitely brings that excitement.”

Hopkins motivated for Jones rematch in 2010
When Bernard Hopkins fought Roy Jones Jr. in 1993, the young middleweight contender was known only to hardcore fans.Casual fans watching Hopkins on HBO for the first time expected Jones, considered the sport's most talented prospect, to knock out the Philadelphia product as he had 20 of his first 21 opponents.
Jones won a unanimous 12-round decision but Hopkins forced the normally explosive 1988 Olympian to box cautiously and he won four rounds on all three official scorecards, serving notice that he might also be a fighter worth watching. They both were.

Klitschko stops Arreola in heavyweight tilt
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Vitali Klitschko pounded Cris Arreola almost at will Saturday night, retaining his heavyweight title when the referee waved the fight to a close after the 10th round.
Klitschko dominated from the opening bell, landing punches from almost every angle against Arreola, who was trying to become the first Mexican-American to win a piece of the heavyweight title. It was his third win since returning to the ring last year after a four-year retirement.
Arreola pressed the action nearly the entire fight against the bigger and
more versatile Klitschko, but paid a price. He landed an occasional punch, but
took plenty of punishment every time.
Klitschko moved to 38-2, while Arreola lost for the first time in 28 fights.

Cris Arreola vs Vitali Klitschko
LOS ANGELES -- Heavyweight contender Cristobal Arreola has heard all the jokes and questions about his weight and conditioning, and he's the first to admit that he's never going to win a Mr. Universe contest. But Arreola is also a good sport about it. He'll talk about his love of Oreo cookies and joke about how one of the ways he took off some of the excess pounds during his training camp was by cutting out beer drinking. "I don't have a muscled body. I'm not a bodybuilder, and I'll never have a chiseled body," Arreola said. "That's not me. Some guys are built like Adonis. I look like I just came off the field from picking oranges." Although he's gotten some laughs with his self-deprecating humor, Arreola also appears to have put in the hard work necessary to get himself into good condition for a daunting task. He's a significant underdog for his heavyweight title challenge against Vitali Klitschko at the Staples Center on Saturday night (HBO, 10 ET, along with a taped replay of last Saturday's Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Juan Manuel Marquez fight). |

Pacquiao has already claimed titles in six weight divisions (including a record four lineal championships). Can the Atlanta Dream pull a "Shock" and go from worst to first, the way Detroit did in 2003? Speaking of Motown, can the defending champs overcome the loss of longtime head coach Bill Laimbeer (he's in the NBA now) and the opening-day, season-ending injury to Plenette Pierson to win a fourth title?
Is Seattle going to get Lauren Jackson back, and could that be enough to end the Storm's streak of losing four years in a row in the first round? Can "Team ACC" -- the Washington Mystics -- make that franchise's second appearance in the conference finals, let alone first in the league finals?
Might Indiana, which won the East title despite the worry that its franchise may be in jeopardy, win its first WNBA championship?

Michael Jordan's girlfriend Yvette Prieto
Of the four Jordan-related searches in Google's Hot Trends list for Friday, three involved his date to the ceremony, Yvette Prieto. According to Hot Trends, which measures searches that experience a boost in popularity, the term "Yvette Prieto" was No. 19, "Michael Jordan girlfriend" was No. 21 and "Michael Jordan's girlfriend" was No. 38.
Jordan's mother, Deloris, sat on his right during the ceremony while Prieto sat on his left in a hard-to-miss red dress.
Prieto has previously been spotted with the Bulls legend at NBA All-Star weekend in Phoenix in February and again in May, when she and Jordan wore color-coordinated outfits to the Kentucky Derby.
The Cuban model once dated singer Julio Iglesias Jr. In January 2003, Iglesias opened up about his relationship with Prieto in a cover story for Spanish publication ¡Hola!, saying "what I like most about her, besides her beauty, which jumps out at you, is her humbleness. ... I'm happy when I'm at her side."
According to The Palm Beach Post, Jordan, 46, and Prieto, believed to be in her early 30s, bought a three-bedroom house together in suburban Miami late last year.
They took out a 30-year mortgage worth $196,000. Prieto filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2002.
Jordan was married to Juanita Jordan for 17 years before the two divorced in December 2006.

Privilege Speech Against Sen. Ping Lacson
More Videos
eMANILA - Striking back at his father's accuser, Sen. Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada on Tuesday accused Sen. Panfilo Lacson of fabricating lies against former President Joseph Estrada and of being an agent of the Arroyo administration.
Dubbing Lacson's statements as based on "gutter talk, hearsay and fishwives' tales," Estrada said Lacson was using his parliamentary privilege to lie about the former president and absolve himself from the twin murders of publicist Salvador "Bubby Dacer and Emmanuel Corbito.
"The bottomline here is - Mr. Lacson in desperation is using the Senate floor to divert attention to president Estrada and away from himself in connection with the forthcoming non-bailable double murder charge that will be filed against him in the Dacer-Corbito murder case. To top it all, he is using his parliamentary privilege so he can lie through his teeth without being held to account to anyone," he said in a privilege speech at the Senate.
In his speech, Estrada said Lacson should have resigned as chief of the Philippine National Police if it was true that he uncovered massive corruption being perpetrated by then president Estrada.
He said that if the former president indeed profited from the illegal numbers game jueteng, he would not have pushed for the legalization of the game through Bingo 2-Ball.
"If ever President Estrada did not bear down on jueteng at that time, he was deeply concerned with those who depended on it for their livelihood. Anong trabaho ang ibibigay sa kanila? Hahayaan ba natin silang pumunta sa mas masamang mga gawain? President Estrada was concerned that those who depended on jueteng would be deprived of income and it was necessary to find an alternative for them," he said.
He said the former president was never in cahoots with smugglers who brought illegal rice and dressed chicken shipments into the country since he himself formed Task Force Aduana to go after smugglers.
He said Estrada later abolished the task force and placed the responsibility of going after smugglers to the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force, which was headed by Lacson.
"If President Estrada was indeed involved in smuggling, why did he not relieve PAOCTF and Mr. Lacson of the authority to act against smuggling and assigned this to another unit which will be more cooperative?" he asked.
He also denied Lacson's allegation that the former president used the PNP to harass tycoon Alfonso Yuchengco to sell his shares in Philippine Telecommunications Investment Corporation (PTIC) to Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC).
Instead of answering the claim directly, Estrada questioned Yuchengco's integrity. "How can we trust the word of someone who was one of the first beneficiaries of GMA when the [Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation] floated the infamous PEACe bonds? How can we trust the word of someone like Mr. Yuchengco who has betrayed the trust of thousands of Pacific Plan holders?" he asked.
Sought endorsement 3 times
The younger Estrada revealed that Lacson approached his father three times to endorse his senatorial bids in 2001 and 2007, and his failed presidential bid in 2004.
"If president Estrada is the devious criminal that Mr. Lacson would now portray him to be, why did Mr. Lacson go to great lengths to seek his endorsement, not once, not twice, but three times in the elections of 2001, 2004 and 2007?" he said
Estrada said Lacson's insistence on running in 2004 was the reason why the opposition candidate with the best chance of winning against President Arroyo, Fernando Poe Jr., lost in his bid.
He added: "I send this warning to all presidentiables. Beware of those persons with wicked dispositions. Be wary of those who come to you and promise uncompromising allegiance and unwavering loyalty. They may last only while convenient and compatible with their own selfish interests and self-serving agenda."
Lacson: Who's lying now?
In response to Jinggoy's privilege speech, Lacson denied he was an agent of the Arroyo administration, and denied he lied in his privilege speech.
"I will never be an administration ally. To aver that I am with the administration is just farthest from the truth," he said. "I never lied in my privilege speech."
Lacson also pointed out that three people have confirmed a number of the accusations in his privilege speech on Monday:
businessman Alfonso Yuchengco said he was pressured and harassed to sell his shares in PLDT;
former armed forces chief and now Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes said there were policy differences between Lacson and then President Estrada over the illegal numbers game, jueteng;
former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis Singson said Estrada was involved in protecting the illegal numbers game, jueteng.
Lacson also told Estrada's son that the Dacer family has filed an amended complaint, which also accuses the former President of ordering the hit on the late publicist in November 2000.
"It is not true that I'm the only one being complained of by the Dacer family," he said.
On Jinggoy's denial of Estrada's involvement in rice smuggling, Lacson said he received word from former police agent Glen Dumlao, co-accused in the Dacer-Corbito double murder, that he personally received an order from President Estrada to release a shipment of smuggled rice.

Against Jordan, defense never rested
History remembers Joe Dumars as one of the best defenders of his generation, strong and sturdy, swift and sure. As soon as the Detroit Pistons drafted him, Dumars understood his division dictated the most arduous job in basketball would belong to him for a long, long time: Defend Michael Jordan. Over and over.
Everyone has his stories of defending Jordan. Mostly, they are nightmares. Mostly, they never end well. Jordan wasn’t so much a basketball player, but a force of nature. He had a relentless resolve. On his way to his Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame induction, Jordan treated every game as a referendum on his greatness. From preseason to the playoffs for 14 years, Dumars’ was among the most thrilling and thankless job in the game. All M.J., all the time.
“The thing that I always felt was that I could never get discouraged,” Dumars said. “He could mentally and emotionally wear down a lot of guys, and it was so easy to let that happen when a guy is dominant, and can score with such ease. The thing was: You were going to witness phenomenal plays up close against him. And you could never drop your head or show any kind of emotion.
Related
“You had to just turn back and go down the other end of the court, even though, in the back of your mind, you’re saying to yourself, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. There’s no way he just made that play.’ ”
Only, Jordan did. Over and over. Until Jordan had a complete supporting cast, Dumars and the Pistons made life hell for him. They were the late ’80s hurdle to the Bulls’ championship cusp. Chuck Daly transformed the NBA with the Jordan Rules, the defensive alignment that delivered help to Dumars on Jordan everywhere on the floor. From Bill Laimbeer to Dennis Rodman, Rick Mahorn to John Sally, the Bad Boys treated Jordan with a collaborative contempt.
The Pistons ended the Bulls’ season twice in the Eastern Conference playoffs late in the decade, and did it with a physicality and tenacity that began an era of brutish basketball born out of a belief that it was the way to stop Jordan.
“Wherever he caught the ball, I knew where the help [defense] was going to be,” Dumars said. “I wouldn’t have to look around, or call for it, or force him one way or another. When you were defending him, it was a big deal that you didn’t have to look around and call for help. When you have to turn around and start pointing to spots for guys to go, you had no chance.
“For me, you had to put yourself out there against Michael. You couldn’t play conservatively. You had to take some chances if you were going to have any success. He’s still going to make spectacular plays on you, and yet you have to be willing to not just sit back and play it safe and think, ‘Well, I’m going to play off him and just give up shots.’ That’s not going to work.
“If Michael was ever frustrated against us, he never showed it. He would never let anyone see it.”
Once the Bulls had a fully bloomed supporting cast around Jordan, the Pistons could no longer hold them off. Jordan would own the Eastern Conference. Indiana would rise and fall. So would the New York Knicks. “You could beat him in a game, and maybe stretch him to the limit in a series, but at the end of the day, you couldn’t conquer Mt. Jordan,” former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy says now.
Funny thing, too: Dumars would watch those series with the Knicks and Indiana Pacers, watch Jordan get into vicious trash-talking episodes with John Starks and Reggie Miller, and it amazed him. With Dumars and Jordan, that never happened. “Not in 14 years was there ever a negative word said between us,” Dumars said.
In fact, Jordan would ask about Dumars’ wife and kids, and Dumars would ask about Jordan’s, and there wouldn’t be much else for the next 2½ hours of basketball. “I would take a tough screen and get hit hard by another player and he would walk by under his breath, ‘You OK?’ And I’d do the same with him. But for us, that was it.”
Through it all, Michael Jordan had a way of testing and trying defenders like no one else. Now, he goes to the Hall maybe they can all take a deep, deep breath. Finally, the ball is out of his hands.
NBA Player HALL OF FAME Ceremony (Michael Jordan)
Air Jordan reaches new heights with place in Hall
Posted Sep 11 2009 9:59PM
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Michael Jordan, maybe the greatest of them all, has taken his place alongside basketball's other greats.
And he never forgot anyone who motivated him to get there.
Jordan was enshrined in the Hall of Fame on Friday night, a final honor that followed all the championship rings and MVP trophies he collected during his career.
From the high school coach who cut him to the last player to defend him in the NBA finals, Jordan remembered everyone who did something to bring out the competitiveness that carried him to the top of basketball.
"I'd do anything to win," he said.
He joined David Robinson and John Stockton, a pair of his 1992 Dream Team teammates, and coaches Jerry Sloan and C. Vivian Stringer in a distinguished class. Jordan insisted during a morning press conference that the weekend wasn't just about him, but he was clearly the star Friday night before a crowd that included former teammates Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman.
"He makes one big shot and everybody thinks he's kind of cool," Stockton joked. "I don't get it."
Jordan cried before beginning his acceptance speech, then entertained the crowd with memories of any slights that inspired him to get to Springfield:
• The coach who cut him from the varsity as a North Carolina schoolboy.
"I wanted to make sure you understood: You made a mistake, dude."
• Isiah Thomas, who allegedly orchestrated a "freezeout" of Jordan in his first All-Star game.
"I wanted to prove to you, Magic (Johnson), Larry (Bird), George (Gervin), everybody that I deserved (to be there) just as much as anybody else, and I hope over the period of my career I've done that without a doubt."
• Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy, who accused Jordan of "conning" players by acting friendly toward them, then attacking them in games.
"I just so happen to be a friendly guy. I get along with everybody, but at the same time, when the light comes on, I'm as competitive as anybody you know."
• The media who said Jordan, though a great player, would never win like Bird or Johnson.
"I had to listen to all that, and that put so much wood on that fire that it kept me each and every day trying to get better as a basketball player."
• Lastly, Utah's Bryon Russell. Jordan recalled meeting Russell while he was retired and playing minor league baseball in 1994 -- and with Sloan looking on in horror -- told of how Russell insisted he could have covered him if Jordan was still playing. Russell later got two cracks at Jordan in the NBA Finals, and he was the defender when Jordan hit the clinching shot to win the 1998 title.
"From this day forward, if I ever see him in shorts, I'm coming at him."
Robinson was enshrined first on Friday before a large San Antonio contingent that included teammates Tim Duncan and Avery Johnson, and coaches Larry Brown and Gregg Popovich. Stockton told the Spurs that his running mate, Karl Malone, was the best power forward, not Duncan.
The enshrinement ceremony took place at Springfield's Symphony Hall, because Jordan was too big for the Hall of Fame. The move to the other building allowed for a crowd of about 2,600, more than double what the Hall can accommodate.
Most of the attention was on Jordan, the five-time NBA MVP, but the others in the class are some of the most accomplished in the sport. Stockton is the career leader in assists and steals, Robinson won an MVP trophy and two titles in San Antonio, Sloan is the only coach to win 1,000 games with one team, and Stringer was the first woman's coach to lead three different schools to the Final Four.
"Unique, unique competitors," Stockton said during the morning press conference.
Fiery ones, too. Sloan, Stockton's longtime coach, told two different tales of fights he was in as a hard-nosed player for Chicago.
Jordan remembered scoring around 20 points in a row late in a game to pull out a win, which was followed by a conversation with Bulls assistant Tex Winter.
"Tex reminded me that there's no 'I' in team," Jordan said. "And I looked back at Tex, I said, 'There's 'I' in win.' So whichever way you want it."
Jordan and Robinson were All-American college players who entered the NBA with high expectations. Sloan acknowledged he wasn't so sure about Stockton at first -- and turns out, neither was Stockton.
"I thought they'd figure me out pretty quickly. I thought the Jazz would figure out that they'd made a mistake, so first paycheck I saved every cent," Stockton said. "I was pretty sure I was a one-year-and-out guy."
He ended up playing 19 seasons in Utah, while Robinson spent 14 with the Spurs. He is still an enormous presence in San Antonio through his charitable work.
"That's one of the things I think I loved most about San Antonio. When you get out in the community, you really feel like you're making a difference. You feel like you're impacting people there and families there," Robinson said. "So anybody who has followed my career, it's been as important as what we did on the court, being involved in the community, making a difference."
Stringer also talked of making a difference in the lives of others, such as the pride she feels watching women's basketball grow into a sport in which her former players can now earn a living playing professionally in the United States. Those contributions to the game, along with her 825 wins, had her sharing a stage Friday with Jordan, whose family she developed a friendship with when they did Nike tours together.
"I once paid to come into the Naismith Hall of Fame," she said, "and now here I am."

Pacquiao started his professional boxing career at the age of 16 at 106 lbs (Light Flyweight). His early fights took place in small local venues and were shown on Vintage Sports' Blow by Blow, an evening boxing show. His professional debut was a 4-round bout against Edmund "Enting" Ignacio on January 22, 1995, which Pacquiao won via decision, becoming an instant star of the program. Close friend Mark Penaflorida's death in 1994 spurred the young Pacquiao to pursue a professional boxing career.
His weight increased from 106 to 113 lbs before losing in his 12th bout against Rustico Torrecampo via a third-round knockout (KO). Pacquiao had not made the weight. So he was forced to use heavier gloves than Torrecampo, thereby putting Pacquiao at a disadvantage.
Shortly after the Torrecampo fight, Pacquiao settled at 112 lbs, winning the WBC Flyweight title over Chatchai Sasakul in the eighth round only to lose it in his second defense against Medgoen Singsurat, also known as Medgoen 3K Battery, via a third-round knockout on a bout held at Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Technically, Pacquiao lost the belt at the scales as he surpassed the weight limit of 112 lbs (51 kg).
Following his loss to Singsurat, Pacquiao gained weight anew. This time, Pacquiao went to the Super Bantamweight division of 122 lbs (55 kg), where he picked up the WBC International Super Bantamweight title. He defended the title five times before his chance for a world title fight came.
Pacquiao's big break came on June 23, 2001, against IBF Super Bantamweight champion Lehlohonolo Ledwaba. Pacquiao stepped into the fight as a late replacement and won the fight by technical knockout to become the IBF Super Bantamweight champion on a bout held at MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada. He defended this title five times and fought to a sixth-round draw against Agapito Sánchez in a bout that was stopped early after Pacquiao received 2 headbutts.

Noynoy declares 2010 presidential bid
MANILA - Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, son of democracy icon Corazon Aquino and national hero Ninoy Aquino, on Wednesday finally declared that he is running for president of the Philippines in 2010.
"Bayang Pilipinas, tatakbo po ako sa pagkapangulo sa darating na halalan. Itutuloy natin ang laban (Philippines, I will run for president in the coming elections. We will continue the fight)," Aquino declared in Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City.
The declaration was timed with the 40th day after the late President Aquino's death.
"Tinatanggap ko ang hiling ng sambayanan. Tinatanggap ko din ang bilin at tagubilin ng aking mga magulang. Tinatanggap ko ang responsibilidad na ituloy ang laban para sa bayan (I am granting the people's wish. I'm accepting my parents' request. I am accepting the responsibility to continue the fight for the country)," Aquino said.
The senator made the announcement after spending several days in the late President Aquino's favorite convent in Zamboanga City, which was one of the requests of his sisters before coming up with a declaration on his presidential run in 2010.
Aquino, meanwhile, said he is waiting for Senator Mar Roxas to decide on his request to become his running mate in 2010.
"Our party president (Roxas) has led us in difficult times. I've offered the slot to him. I'm awaiting his decision," Aquino said when asked who will be his running mate.
Roxas, the Liberal Party's (LP) supposed standard bearer, decided to withdraw amid clamors for Aquino's run for the presidency.
The LP president, who was present during Aquino's declaration, declined to comment on his possible vice-presidential bid.
However, in a previous interview over radio dzMM, Roxas said that Aquino had asked him to be his running mate.
"Sabi ko sa kanya, kung kalmado ka na... Nakapag-retreat ka na at gusto mo pa rin [akong tumakbong vice-president], mag-usap tayo ulit (I told him that if you have cleared your mind. After your retreat and you still want me to run for vice-president, we will talk again)," Roxas said during the radio interview.
He was relating to a conversation during one of the meetings he had with Aquino before he declared his withdrawal from the 2010 presidential race.
Aquino also announced during the press conference LP's partial senatorial ticket, which includes former Senate President Franklin Drilon, Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Biazon, former congressman Neric Acosta and Akbayan party-list Rep. Risa Hontiveros.
